11K-Mile Time Capsule! 1986 Isuzu P’up

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The seller of this 1986 Isuzu P’up pickup (is that redundant?) lists the mileage as being 11,867, and that’s amazing for a vehicle that’s almost 40 years old now. Please check out the very limited photos the seller has provided to see for yourself how nice this l’il rig looks. They have this time capsule listed here on Facebook Marketplace in San Mateo, California and they’re asking $6,550 or best offer. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Mitchell G. for the tip!

For 1986, buyers could choose from 21 different Isuzu configurations, from a regular bed and regular cab as shown here, or a long bed. There was a Spacecab, which Isuzu called their “Super Cab” with extra space behind the seat. They had, of course, 4WD models, and models with a bit more luxury with LS trim. Then you could choose engines, including a turbodiesel. This example is a fairly straightforward pickup. Speaking of the word pickup, Isuzu used a bit of a takeoff on a shortened portmanteau in naming these trucks the P’up, short for pickup.

The Isuzu Faster pickup was sold in North America as the Chevrolet LUV until the Chevy S-10 came out for the 1982 model year. This P’up is a second-generation Isuzu, and they were made from 1980 through 1988 here and you’d be looking for quite a while to find a nicer example than this one for sale here. At least cosmetically, based on the photos. We never know the actual condition of vehicles shown here, of course. We have to go by the same photos you can see and the information given in the seller’s listing. From what we can see, this truck appears to be in fantastic condition. They say that “MOST of it” is clean and original.

They’re short on photos, however, and that’s a shame when you’re trying to sell such a nice-looking vehicle. I don’t understand why anyone would limit the number of photos when they could show everything to entice potential buyers, but it’s one of the oldest complaints from those of us who like more photos. Engine-wise, this one should have Isuzu’s 2.0-liter SOHC inline-four with 82 horsepower. The seller says it has a three-speed, but there wasn’t a three-speed manual, and I’m guessing it’s actually a four-speed manual. A five-speed would also have been available. It reportedly runs well, and it looks great to me. Any thoughts on this P’uppy?

I LUV these things!!! ( Pun intended). These Isuzu pickups were very popular as we had an Isuzu dealership local where I grew up. ( It was a Pontiac dealer that also sold Isuzus AND DeLoreans too, What a time to grow up as a car crazed kid) I really wanted a Mitsubishi pickup as a teenager, but would have been ecstatic to have one like this too. Rust is the bigest enemy of these. I can definitely attest to how stout their drive trains were. We had a ’90 Trooper 4 door 2.6 4 cylinder 5 speed that had nearly 200K miles until the frame decided to not want to do its job anymore I still had the original clutch in it. ( It was geared so low you could pretty much slip the clutch at an idle to get going). We had a family friend with a blue one like this but with a 5 speed. He called it his little Poooop ( with a French accent) But he loved it and used it for years. He let me drive it and I loved it. Just looking at that vinyl floor material and seat I can still smell the interior on little Japanese trucks like these and I mean that in a good memories sort of way. I believe the mileage claim, just look at the condition of the silver paint on the steel rims. I think they’re original paint.

Not sure I buy the mileage claim here, a photo of the engine bay and undercarriage would be helpful. I owned one of these, don’t remember the exact year but it looked like this, only a different color. And as noted, rust usually killed these, including the one I owned.

I grew up about 5 miles from where the truck is located. Rust isn’t an issue unless it lived with a mile or two from the ocean, but then it would rust from the top down. Little trucks like this were everywhere when I was growing up, they were adopted quickly by the locals and remain popular.

The price is too high, if it was priced closer to market it wouldn’t be on the market for 8 weeks.

Ha, the stuff people think they can just throw a price on because they think it it worth the money. No thanks. NADA Blue Book says it is worth minus a buck 250, that is all I will give.

My girlfriend in the 80s had one of these and it was really fun to drive. Looks much better with the cap removed. I’d have to see why the floor covering is so lumpy and see what’s under the dreaded steering wheel cover before I buy that mileage claim.

Definitely 111,000 miles, not 11,000. Look at the wear on the seat and door card.

Just messaged the owner. It has 118,000 miles on it. When I asked him why the ad stated 11K Miles he didn’t respond

I believe some corporate Domino’s stores used these for delivering pizzas back in the ’80s. Saw several back home in coastal Virginia.

Spent 46 years there on the lower Bay, but it’s getting a bit too crowded these days.
