Only 13k Miles? 1984 Ford Mustang SVO Turbo

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Pat L. sent us the link to this 1984 Ford Mustang SVO. It was an innovative car that featured a 4 cylinder turbo engine. The Mustang is located in Addison, Texas which is a suburb of Dallas. The car is listed here on Craigslist for $20,900. That seems like a good deal for a special car with only 13K miles on the odometer. It has only been listed for about a week.

The interior of the car looks brand new. The engine is backed by a 5 speed manual transmission. While quite a few of these cars were built (4,507). The owner states that it is one of 862 SVO cars built in silver metallic and one of 642 SVO cars built with this paint and trim code. It still has its factory tires. Evidently, this information came from the Marti Report pulled by the owner. Ford started its Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division around 1980 to focus on producing cars with special handling and generating power more fuel efficient engines.

All 1984 Mustang SVO’s were equipped with a turbocharged 140 cubic inch inline four-cylinder engine. The 2.3 liter engine was factory rated at 175 horsepower from the factory and 210 lb ft of torque. At it introduction, the SVO Mustang was expected to redefine the pony car.  However, the cars were slow off the line and not competitive with the V8 Mustangs, Camaros and Trans Ams. One note is that they handled well, for a Mustang.

The car is equipped with AM/FM radio, fog lamps, 4 wheel disc brakes, power steering and gauge package. The 3 door hatchback SVO was built from 1984 to 1986 with a total production of 9,835. The body and original paint look exceptional. I like the Mustang aluminum wheels and the subtle add ons like the spoilers in front of the rear tires and the rear spoiler across the back of the car.

I doubt that this car has rolled over 100,000 miles from the general niceness of this car. Would need to see the condition of the pedals and the driver side outer setback bolster to be 100% sure. He probably clicked the wrong box when making the listing. The big badges next to the ford oval have to go, though.

Also it still has the original Eagle NCT tires on it. They have been out of production since the 1980’s

Where does the seller state the Odometer rolled over? Certainly not in the ad. They say “super low 13k miles from new”.

Sorry to be skeptical of the mileage claim, but there has to be a specific story of why an almost 40 year old car has that low of a mileage.

I would be pulling every Vehicle Report I could get my hands on to make sure before I would pay a premium for any car with low mileage claims.

I sold Fords from 61 to 91 and this was one of the sorriest of the new vehicles that came my way. Along with the T-Bird SVO and the Probe.

What’s wrong with a good Probe?

Not competitive ? I had a friend who had one. We marched right up to Martin Dragway and I put my TransAm GTA 350 up against it. I honestly think he would have beat me if he could get off the line. Now I met a guy with identical cast as mine he said his was a slouch and was impressed with mine. Mine ran consistent 14.6 all day long. Hot , cold it didn’t matter.. those SVO’s are no slouch !

Had a friend in college who’s parent’s bought him one. As a european sports car guy at the time I really appreciated what Ford was doing with this car. He blew the engine, no surprise as he drove it like he didn’t care…which with his parents money he probably didn’t. Anyway, the dealership rebuilt it to the later model specs and you could definately feel the boost from 175 to, he claimed 225hp.
Probably the cars biggest failures was what was endemic to most turbo cars back then – off boost then ON BOOST! Fun, for awhile, but for a car built to handle it really required a whole different driving style. Keep the foot on the gas while braking to keep the turbo spooled is one example.
Over the years I’ve thought about picking one up. This one seems like a bargain given the mileage.

PRA4SNW, I had a friend of should call him an acquaintance. He had a number of muscle cars and he drove them all but very little and drove a beater all winter and the rest of the time. Yes, people do buy cars and can afford to own others so they keep the value up on the ones they want to.

MTBorst: I can believe it happens. It’s just if I’m going to pay a premium for low mileage, I would want to have some sort of proof – service receipts, registrations, CarFax, etc.
