13,056 Miles? 1977 International Scout Traveler

If you thought a standard International Harvester Scout II was too compact, you might consider this long-wheelbase version, known as the Traveler, to be more accommodating. Complete with a hardtop that makes all-weather practicality a reality, the seller claims the mileage as being an impressively low 13,056, which is tough to validate one way or the other based on cosmetic condition. Is it a slightly tatty survivor or a case of an odometer that rolled over? Find it here on eBay with a $14,700 Buy-It-Now and let us know what you think.

Now, look – I am in no way disputing the mileage claims. I always want to believe a vehicle has somehow escaped the ravages of time and use to emerge with relatively few miles on the clock. I just have a hard time with this one given how banged up the paint is, both inside and out. I suppose the Scout could have been stored carelessly, left behind in grandpa’s garage with the top off and the interior used for extra storage. The tan paint does look quite nice otherwise, as do the graphic inlays.

The seats look very nice as well, but then you see the cracked trim around the shift lever, and other distortions on the dash, in the up-close pictures of the eBay gallery. The dash itself is OK, not great, and shows some discoloration. The door panels and back seat look better, but then there’s the weathered cigarette lighter and tired dashboard trim. The gauge faces don’t look that fresh, either. And upon closer inspection, the driver’s seat does have a split going down the sides.

The engine bay presents OK, with the hoses still looking pretty fresh and the brake booster showing good, clean paint. The 304 V8 is said to run out well, and the seller claims there is no rust to be found. While the Scout is equipped with A/C, it doesn’t work, and the seller doesn’t offer any details in terms of mechanical history or recent maintenance work. Overall, it’s a mixed bag for me given the discrepancies between mileage and condition, despite the fact that I find these Scouts very hard to resist – but make mine a short wheelbase body.

Despite resembling the factory Decals, the Stripes on this one are actually sprayed-on bedliner (!).
Just another indicator for the odometer having rolled over once or twice…

If this truck only has 13,056 miles on it, The way the paint and chrome, especially the grill and headlight area look, It must have seen some heavy use and abuse or a non caring owner being all scratched up like it is. My old 1992 grand caravan with 127,000 miles on it looks like a cream puff compared to this International.

113,000 miles at least. No question about it.

How can the seller say that with a straight face??? Add 100 or 200 thousand miles.

Because they really do not know and do not want to know. They are just quoting the odometer. This truck looks like a well cared for farmers truck and has seen lots of gravel roads judging by the stone chips around the front bumper. Probably in Texas or Arizona where there is virtually no snow and thus no salt on roads. Those old Scouts just dissolved into rust flakes at the sight of road salt.

There seem to be three classes of Scout. The really nice ones where the lower body is not painted black. The rusty ones with the bottom painted black and the plain ol’ rusty ones.

The seller has been on eBay since October of last year. I do not know if they are deliberately lying about these vehicles or are just plain stupid. Integrity seems to be gone forever. This Scout has not been trashed but it certainly was not well cared for during its life. The truck has been used and a lot by the condition of it. Speaking of condition I honestly have to say after studying the pics on eBay I would judge the mileage at 213,056. The original listing expired and has been re-listed so nobody has bought into their deception so far but it is only a matter of time. Remember, “Not everything that is old is a Gold Mine”
