15-Year Project: 1967 Ford Mustang 289 V8

After a phenomenal launch in 1965-66, Ford’s Mustang got its first restyle in 1967. It was modest, yet retaining the “pony car” look that found more than 1.2 million buyers in 2 ½ years. The seller bought this ‘Stang as a project 15 years ago and has brought it along nicely, though some further touches are needed. Located in Kalispell, Montana (but wearing California plates), this Ford is available here on eBay, where the current bid is $4,050 (reserve unmet).

When a flood of competition looming to get into this new space in 1967 and 1968, Ford refreshed the Mustang in ‘67. Perhaps the biggest change was to modify the engine compartment to accommodate big block motors like the 390 cubic inch option. The 289 small block was still the favorite, and one sits under the hood of the seller’s car, presumably original. Since some after-the-fact bling is present, it’s logical to assume that some upgrades have been made (only a guess).

Sales were down 22% from 1966, but that was a record year, and the Mustang now had the Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, and Mercury Cougar to contend with. Along with the Plymouth Barracuda, that also had a new body. The seller, the third owner of this pony, bought it around 2010 and went to work, perhaps giving it new paint and a vinyl top in the process. The interior may be original, and the bucket seats need some upholstery repair.

The black hood scoops with turn signals (?) may have been added, as has a Bluetooth radio. Some lighting issues may have been created while installing the latter. The Ford is asking for a new set of carpeting. We’re told the 289 and automatic transmission work as they should, and the Mustang gathers its fair share of attention. We assume that the odometer reading of 76,500 miles is legit. What would be your top dollar for this pony?

The hood scoop is from a 1969 Mustang. If my eyes are correct, it also looks like dual exhaust has been added.
