Special Stang: 15k Mile 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Right before the end of the “Fox-chassis” era of Mustang production, Ford decided to do a special run of Mustang SVT Cobra models. There were only 4993 of them, and they came in just three colors: The often-seen red, black, and the lesser-known teal. If you missed your chance to grab one of these up earlier, here’s an opportunity presented on ebay. Just don’t be shocked at the dollar figure, which is a Ulysses S. Grant $50 away from eighty thousand bucks. If you’ve got that kind of cash, you’ll have to make it to Chatsworth, CA, to get your mitts on the prize. You’ve got time. The ad is open-ended, not an auction. Then again, someone else might be plotting to get a hold on your car even as you read this.

What is an SVT Cobra? A “Special Vehicle Team” low-production offering. They were all coupes, and they had distinctive features like special wheels, a unique rear spoiler and bumper cover along with rocker moldings. One notable detail was the use of a running horse logo in the grille opening. This hadn’t been seen since 1978. In terms of mechanicals, the brakes were upgraded, as was the suspension. The engine was the familiar 5.0[liter V8, but with bits and pieces from the Ford racing catalogue. Together, the mods yielded up 235-horsepower. The only way to shift the gears was through a 5-speed manual transmission. All of this added up to a unique and exotic piece of engineering, especially for the time. I’ll take mine in teal, thank you, but I’m not sure I’ll do it at this price.

The seller mentions the idea that this car will continue to appreciate in value. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I’m thinking this model has maxed out its investment potential and will now flatline for a while. Looking around in the market shows that nice examples rarely bounce below $50,000, but that only a few have approached the magic $100K number. One outlier was taken home by someone with more than $200,000 to spend. It was brand new with 12 miles on the odometer. Originally, this car would have set you back a shade over $18,000.

What would a Valley Girl do with a car like this? Drive it! The only thing is, the SVT Cobra in question is relatively low in miles recorded at about 15,000, so making it a daily car would quickly put it into the average-miles-traveled category. And at a price anywhere near the ask here, you’d be nervous anytime you found yourself on the freeway, which you would do often, since everyone knows that “nobody walks in LA.”

Thank you Brian K. If one hasn’t followed prices on these Cobras, one might be shocked to learn what they bring. They now are solidly in the realm of high-dollar collectible. The teal ones seem to be the most prized, and low miles/original condition are of course important. I don’t closely follow their prices but I suspect this one isn’t that far off.

And you are right, at these prices, their “everyday” use is likely severely limited.

    Indeed, a “Very Special Stang.”

As inexplicable as that is, you are correct. You can get a 1994-95 Cobra with the exact same powertrain for a fraction of this money. Some cars just take on icon status and that is what people are paying for!

If you “everydayed” this car, it would be stolen everyday.

I have an official certificate from Ford Motor Company stating that I am an official SVT Team Member. Does that mean that I can get a discount on this car? Sorry, I was just dreaming about the part of the discount. Yes $5 and that certificate will maybe get me a cup of coffee!

I recall when we got one of these in trade on an early Durango. Seems the owner’s DL points were getting out of hand and had to get a more premium friendly vehicle. I took it for a short drive but returned because it seems there was no place to stretch its legs without being watched. Maybe my lucky day.
