17,200 Original Miles: 1968 Chevrolet Camaro

If you are one of those people who has harbored an overwhelming desire to own a new 1968 Camaro, well I’m sorry, but I can’t help you on that score. However, this Camaro may well represent the next best thing. Listed for sale here on eBay, this 1968 Camaro is located in Dallas, Texas, and is offered with a clear title. From an opening bid of $10,000, the bidding has now reached $21,300.

There is no doubt that this Camaro presents beautifully. The paint is all original except for one small, old repair on the right rear from a parking lot bump. That repair was completed in 1982 and seems to have stood up well. There are also a couple of small marks in the paint, but that’s to be expected on a 50-year-old car. Originally sold in Los Angeles, California, it remained there until 2004 when the original owner gave the car to her nephew (lucky guy!) who resided in Iowa. The car maintains its original black plates, and there is also a fair stack of documentation including the original invoice, Protect-O-Plate, yearly registration cards from the California DMV and full and complete service and maintenance records which verify that this Camaro has traveled a genuine 17,200 miles.

The seller provides a number of shots of the underside of the car, and it really looks to be solid and incredibly clean for an unrestored car of this age. There is hardly a sign of surface corrosion under here, and it’s nearly clean enough to eat off the floor.

The interior presentation is in keeping with a car that has been well cared for. Everything inside the car looks to be present and in great condition. The only real faults that I can see is some discoloration on the tops of the armrests on the doors, some stretching of the material on the driver’s seat, and wear on the ashtray lid on the center console. Otherwise, if you slipped behind the wheel it would be pretty easy to believe that you’ve traveled back in time to 1968.

If I were to get really fussy I would point out the corrosion on the brake master cylinder and possibly some on the thermostat housing, but otherwise under the hood presents as well as the rest of the car. That little 327ci V8 is virtually spotless and is backed by an automatic transmission. The car has also been optioned with power steering, power brakes, and factory air conditioning.

I don’t really know what the final sale price on this particular Camaro will be, but I would expect it to be north of $30,000. If all of the documentation stands up to scrutiny, then what this car represents is a true, unmolested, low mileage survivor. Cars like this are definitely out there to be had, but they don’t come along every day. It will be interesting to see what the final sale price is on this car.

OMG! This Camaro is gorgeous! I’ll bet the underside and engine compartment are pretty much just the same as when the car left the factory with the exception of the direction of the air cleaner lid engine designation.

Man, were I gifted such a car, no way would I put it up for auction UNLESS I were truly desperate….so, in all fairness, I’m going to assume that’s the sellers reason. (quickly scrounges drool guard for the KB)

I don’t give a crap about Camaros ninety-nine times out of a hundred. But I’m making a big exception for this one. Low mileage or not, I’d have to drive it. Conserve it but drive it.

That was my exact thought when I looked at all the pics. I almost really want it.

Why has this car been on ebay so many times. Something not right about this car. This is the 5th time this car has been on ebay. Makes you wonder. Look at completed auctions from the seller.

Likely bidder problems. Lots of flakes on eBay bid without a dime in their pocket.

4th time through.. Only one time sold and other 2 didn’t reach buy now price. It will show up at BJ or Mecum. This is free er or cheap advertising. Nice car though.

First thing that came to my mind (outside of it looking like a very beautiful original car!) was that the seller is a fool for not taking it to Mecum. Someone would probably pay 50k plus if the documentation held up.

Auction ended @ 33k “because item no longer available”… will be interesting if it pops up… again.

This is an absolute gem! Again, I’m always happy to see an honest, original car surface. I’d say this one will see $30 grand and well worth it.

Nice find! I would grab this at $10 grand. But as you mention, it’s going to go up, up, up from there. Unfortunately my bank account won’t go up, up, up to match it. Ah, such is life.

    Still, great find.

Great find! This is what I watch BF for each day. I can almost smell the newness of this car. An air conditioned 68 in the right colors really ticks all the boxes for me. Little bit of trivia….the door armrests on just about every 1967-70 GM car were made of similar, but not exactly the same, vinyl material as the seats. In restoring my Buick Gran Sport I spotted the grain difference instantly. They along with the steering wheels and dash pads seem to fade at a different rate than anything else in the cabin. The armrest caps were also stretched over foam with heavy adhesive which added to their demise if not stored in a hermetically-sealed garage!

I bet the reproduction top armrest pads from China will split/crack/discolor even faster than the ones on the car when new. The color of the top armrest pad on the driver’s door doesnt match the rest of the interior. Both the plastic armrest bases are cracked.

It looks like it has the claimed mileage, for once. I just wish the sellers would occasionally show their documentation in the ad, there is no better time to do so. To me, it looks like someone has painted the valve covers, oil filler and water pump, but I’m not that familiar with how low mileage engine compartments should look.

Someone mentioned &30,000, if the documentation holds up, I’d bet it goes higher.

Other than not having a black vinyl top and black interior, this is a dead on same version of my first car! Of course it had begun to decay after 10 years of heavily salted Detroit streets but I only paid $300 for it. This looks like a great example, now all it needs is a blue Earl Schieb paint job, rear spring shackles and SS Cragers with tires that are way too big on all four corners. Don’t forget the B-52’s first album in the K-mart eight track player either.

Having owned one like this with it’s 210hp 327, Powerglide and single rear leaf rear suspension I can tell ya this car isn’t much to get excited about, at least not driving wise.

When you put the longer shackles on to jack up the rear end you end up with a see-saw type ride. This is good since you can justify putting on a set of traction bars!

Currently at $23k and 22 bidders so far. This little gem looks to heading past the $30k mark. A lovely little piece of motoring history.

You don’t often see a gen 1 Camaro exceed $30K unless it’s a Z28, SS or RS. But I agree this one likely will.

I could never understand why the base 327 v8 was detuned to 210 horsepower for the Camaro only. Fuel economy reasons?

I am a Mopar-mad, dyed-in-the-wool Dodge Challenger girl, but having been born in ’68, this era of Camaros has always tickled my fancy just a bit. To see one this pristine and lo mi, even though it’s a bit on the simple side and an automatic (I exclusively drive stick), I would adopt this thing in a heartbeat and baby it like I birthed it myself!

I agree with LAB3, though, that it needs a bit of a facelift with a prettier paint job (blue or black metalflake), maybe some slightly heftier wheels on the back, and a subtle spoiler… Oh hell, here I go again with diamond vault dreams and my dime store bank account. Sigh. 😔

I live in California. just as a suggestion, whoever gets this car, and whatever they do with it, hang on to the black plates and the dealer license plate frames (Those are 99% proof positive of the time frame and purchase point.) Even though they are reproducing black plates now, you can spot the difference in a minute. Out here those real black plates are a valuable item. If your state says to surrender them, just say they weren’t on the car. You’re not responsible if they were “stolen” or lost. That way if the car comes back to California it can be re-registered under those original plates.

Hope it’s not a powerglide. Although a good tranny for racing and around town. Not great on a road trip with only 2 gears. Otherwise what’s not to like about this car.
