18 Years In The Barn: 1984 Chevrolet Corvette

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If anyone ever tries to sell you a 1983 Chevy Corvette, run, don’t walk. There was no such thing. The C4 debuted in 1984 due to quality issues and parts delays, and the last C3 Corvette was a 1982 model. The seller has an ’84 ‘Vette that’s been off the road since 2007, and it looks a bit rough after sitting for 18 years. Located in a musty barn or warehouse in Lamesa, Texas, this project is available here on craiglist for $2,000. Any takers on this tip brought to us by Mitchell G.?

Because there was no 1983 Corvette (one surviving prototype is said to exist and is still owned by GM), demand for the all-new 1984 Corvette was high. More than 51,000 ’84 ‘Vettes were produced, double that of the 1982 C3 wind-down year (it had been around since 1968). We don’t know much about the seller’s white ’84 other than it has 122,000 miles and has been largely forgotten since 2007. The photos provided are few and not great.

We assume it has a 350 cubic inch V8, the Corvette workhorse of the 1980s. An automatic transmission is also there, but this vehicle hasn’t run in nearly two decades. Given the thick layers of dust and dirt, it’s hard to tell what you might find when you give it a bath. The tan interior is also quite dirty and neglected. And don’t expect a title when you show up with your trailer because there isn’t one. Perhaps this is a good donor for another C4 you’ve been working on.

Looks worth the gamble for little money.

Actually the BG Corvette museum has one surviving 83.
The other limited 1983 models which failed QC were made into 84 models with quality improvements added for the brand.

They used to let the new Bowling Green plant take a model home on weekends to get feedback to improve them. It helped get the lil items improved.

I toured the plant in 1984 as WKU student taking quality classes back in the day.

These still not on top desired models and keep lower resell values..

i wish good luck on sale and hope it gets a chance again on the streets and at this price will get revitalized.

Those no rotate tires were an expensive add but it was a redesign from leaving ST Lois and it evolved a long way .

The 84 is unloved because it had the miserable “crossfire” fuel injection system. The wheels are the same size, front to back, so you can rotate the tires by swapping front to rear on one side. This is a stick shift car so that’s a plus. The question is does it have Z51 suspension. If it does it rides like a buckboard and has too much roll stiffness in the rear that results in jacking during hard cornering, but that’s the more desirable from a collectors standpoint. Better to make it a restomod with an LS if you really want to have a fun ride.

I think it’s an automatic, the brake pedal looks too wide for a stick shift and there is no visible clutch pedal.

It’s cheap, but not a necessarily a bargain. It haggard looking and has no title. These aren’t in high demand so prices are low. When you compare the cost of this particular car and the amount of money needed to bring it back to life and either restore or modify it, there are cars which are better value. If this is someone’s dream car it might make sense, otherwise it’s better to keep looking.

Love the spinner caps. I don’t remember that being a factory option. Anyone?

Don’t believe they were an option. Maybe aftermarket ?

The absolute WORST Corvette ever made. These things were horrific when new and this one is even worse now! Run, don’t walk, from this thing unless you are desperate for some parts. You can buy a mint example for less than the cost of painting this one, and that is a fact!

No title means the seller probably does not own it, at least not outright. Probably found it in a building they bought. Pretty much guaranteed that there is no key.

“As is-Where is” and “No Title”
Barely any pictures, barely any text.
    Hmmmmm
And all for only $2 Grand. Cheap!
Do we even know this seller is the true owner of the vehicle?
    Smells scam-ish. Run!

Well, at $2,000 I will admit that it is cheap, but that’s about the only thing positive about it. There is absolutely, positively nothing of value here. Sometimes a fella just has to say “enough is enough” and simply walk away.

    Maybe a candidate for a Lemons car…

It’s too expensive to be eligible to run LeMons.

For all the (admittedly accurate) disparaging comments about this year’s Corvette model, the previous owners got 122,000 miles of fun out of it. Got their money’s worth! But they used it all up.
