18,600 Original Miles! 1989 Mercedes 560SL

As I’ve opined on these pages before, if you’re looking for an R107 Mercedes, you have endless options. But if you have to own the best, holding out for a low mileage example like this one with under 20,000 original miles is one way to stand apart. This example is effectively showroom new, and is commanding a $59,900 asking price. But to be fair, with excellent colors and no visible flaws, the price doesn’t seem that unreasonable. Find the Mercedes here on eBay, where the seller notes the ’89 560SL was the lowest production year of this famous model.

And actually, when you consider the high prices that Mercedes convertibles from the 60s and 70s command, there’s good evidence this 560SL may one day be as desirable given its high state of preservation. Also worth celebrating is the fact that this one is a different color other than red or white, and that black actually suits this car quite well. The matching black hardtop puts it over the top, if you ask me – though the chrome wheels are a sad artifact of bygone era.

The Palomino leather interior is nothing all that exotic, as many Mercedes cars from the 1980s wore this material. However, it remains as-new, with a sheen we rarely see on Mercedes vehicles with three or four times the mileage. The dash shows no cracks, the airbag steering wheel shows perfect leather, and the often-faded and broken wood trim retains a mirror finish that is hard to recreate without starting from scratch. These are the little details Mercedes enthusiasts will drool over when viewing a car like this.

The seller notes regular servicing at Star Motor Cars in Houston, where the 560SL was purchased new. The last known service date occurred in 2015, which seems a pinch too ancient for me – even lightly used cars should have the oil changed and brake fluid flushed annually. When it comes to owning Mercedes that will retain their value, the R107 cars are hard to chart – examples like this one will sell for big money while others struggle to break into the 20s. Whether owning an investment that will take some time to catch up is up to you, but I doubt this car will ever lose its value (provided you never use it!)

I’m with you on the wheels Jeff, satin finish like the spare would be so much more complimentary to this color. That being said, this seems like the ideal buy for someone in the market for one. Low miles, documented for a change, well presented, desirable condition overall. There may be another one or two in the country somewhere with similar attributes, but when will they be offered and how will a realistic buyer know when and where. This is offered by a dealer who is in the high end car market, sure the price is padded…………..it’s what they do. Make an offer, get a dialog going, and if some guy with a bad case of the “I wants” doesn’t scoop you it just might be had for a better buy in.

When I see a Mercedes like this with so few miles I think major engine problems all its life or a broken odometer.

Beware! Odometer doesn’t line up! These VDO’s, were easily altered.

one with 25k miles recently sold on another site for $38k – this one seems high given that sale. I have two 1986 models, one with Euro lights and AMG style cladding and about 30k miles that I would sell for $32k and another with less than 45k miles that I would sell for $28k. I thiink someone doesn’t really want ot sell unless the hit a home run at $59k

I believe less than 6,000 of these left the factory in 1989. Production ended in June. They are the rarest of the 560’s. So, a low mileage example with known history and service records will always command a higher price. If you have ever wanted a 107, this is the one to have. A really great example and stunning presentation.

I would be very cautious of the miles. I do know for a fact that the odometer should not be off as it is. When you tamper with the odometer this is what happens. Beautiful car and I do love the way it is sitting on the factory chrome but the milage is a concern especially when the price reflect the milage. I have seen many cars where the last service was several years ago although it was still driven and then the miles was turned back to the last recorded miles.

If the car was black/black you would have something. Black and peanut butter kills it for me.

I have an 87 with 120000 miles on it and I just checked the odometer on mine and those numbers are all nice and straight something tells me that was tampered with cuz those numbers are crooked they shouldn’t be that way
