1,874 Original Miles: 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z/28

Bidding has already reached an impressive figure, but the reserve remains unmet for this time capsule Camaro IROC Z/28 with under 2,000 original miles. That’s not surprising as this is a big number car all day long, equipped with all the right stuff, great colors, and of course, in near-showroom condition. Yellow over black is one of the more desirable combos for Camaros of this vintage, and not seen all that often. The seller notes that it retains its original tires and that it looks just as good underneath. This is a showpiece, and while you can’t ever drive it, you’ll likely be able to say you own the best. Find it here on eBay where bidding is over $34,000 with the reserve unmet.

The third generation Camaro has been appreciating for a while now, as collectors turn a favorable eye to vehicles made in the late 80s and early 90s. Certainly, Camaros and Firebirds of this generation are as iconic as any other sports or muscle car made in this era, and the IROC package made muscle cars salivate. Of course, most of them have been used and abused by now, or even if they’re preserved, are sporting some level of aftermarket modifications. This example has seen none of those treatments, obviously, having been kept under lock and key as someone’s retirement plan since new. The cosmetics are outstanding, and the seller claims it has been appraised at $45,000.

Now, the good news is, the reserve is supposedly not that high, but it’s likely somewhere in between there and the current offer. The Camaro is equipped with the fuel injected 5.7L V8 and four-speed automatic transmission. The 5-speed manual would make this Camaro near untouchable as being one of the most desirable examples available for sale, but given the time-warp condition and respectable performance with the automatic, I doubt it will turn too many people off. The cosmetics are just as exceptional under the hood, and there’s virtually nothing to address here in terms of flaws. The seller is not the first owner, having purchased the Camaro with 1,800 miles.

The interior is as spotless as the rest of the car, with attractive buckets wearing black cloth upholstery, matched with black carpets and door panels. The seller notes it features “….all of the power options available that year,” along with a factory overhead console and T-top roof panels. The Camaro has been kept in climate controlled storage while in the current owner’s care, and since only 74 miles have been added, it’s also been barely driven. While having a car used for static display isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time (well, maybe for some), you could do far worst for having a car to simply sit and stare at all day long. A garage queen, yes, but one that wears great colors and can reliably be driven 25 miles per year.

Museum piece. (private, or public, doesn’t matter)

Neat car, but you can’t drive it, and that doesn’t match my attitude towards cars. If they are fun to drive, that’s what I want to do.

It always seems a little sad to see a car that never got to be driven as it should’ve been. Looking at it sitting in the garage was never my thing either.

Having owned a similar IROC the 5.7 w/ auto is a formidable piece, especially back in the late 80’s.
Don’t believe the 5 speed was available unless the 5.0 was specified…maybe in the great white north?

This is what I was about to write, no manual trans on the 5.7 liter engine available from dealer.

My brother had one but white with the 5.0 and manual trans. Not a fast car but so much fun to drive!!!!

You are correct! The 5.7L was only available with an automatic transmission. I owned one too.

Yes 5-sp was only on the 305 cars. I had a 88 Iron with the 5.7 and was a lot of fun traded that one for a 89 turbo Trans Am.

That Turbo Trans Am was one of the fastest cars I ever owned hard to keep it pointed straight when the car was full throttle.Sold it for old muscle 1970 Cougar XR7 428 Ram air convertible. Not as fast but a great fun car and that V8 sound of 428 cubic inches is like music to my ears.

I admire the restraint it takes to buy something like this and not use and enjoy it. It’s like having a beautiful spouse and never…. nevermind.

I admire more people who buy cars like this, use them, enjoy them, and lovingly care for them. That’s what it’s all about.

Nice car but no way it’s worth $45k. Maybe Try again in another 25 years.

To the right buyer, they’ll pay. There are collectors with the space, looking for “the 80’s IROC” and this is it. Even if the reserve isn’t met, the seller will probably reach out to the high bidder to negotiate a sale.

I actually love when cars are put away…to see a car look exactly as it had been on the lot when new…no half-ass restoration to criticize…actual tires the manufacturer used…what new upholstery or leather looked like…devoid of road rash on every body panel…and when it is time to find your dream car, one with 1500 miles on the clock?…priceless…so keep on putting these cars away…I just might own it some day, without the hassle of 30 years or more of storage!

Very impressive, especially how he managed to keep the 1987 custom interior door panels from losing their indents!

The right color, t-tops, and the 5.7. This should set the top of the market for a 3rd gen F body, outside the 1LE, which tends to appeal to a smaller core of true enthusiasts.
