1949 Chevrolet Deluxe: Cuban Taxicab?

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We aren’t sure about this seller’s statement that this Chevy would make a cool “Cuban Taxicab”, but we assume that it is a reference to the old taxis still roaming the street of Havana and not that this car served as a Cuban Taxi. Listed here on craigslist Charlotte, NC is this 1949 Chevrolet Deluxe priced at $4,900. The owner says that the engine and drivetrain appear to be original.

'49 Deluxe engine

The engine runs with gas in the carburetor as per the owner to the 3-speed column shift. We don’t know the condition of fuel pump, lines, or the tank.

'49 Deluxe left front

This is a project, you will need to work on the brakes and “other” restoration work (per the owner) to be a driver. A trailer maybe in order or a transportation company to get her home.

'49 Deluxe dash

The interior appears to be in nice shape.

'49 Deluxe right rear

There isn’t an image of the underside and/or the inside the massive truck. There are other images provided with the ad. The owner thinks that this car is a: “Cool, Cuban Taxicab.”  We don’t know the paint code or when this was resprayed, it does not appear to be a Chevy factory offering for ’49. We don’t know the ownership history or if this was in fact was a “Cuban Taxicab”? Are there cigars in the truck?

Motor-on,

Robert

Don’t see too many 2 door hardtops from this era. The taillights appear to be 49, but that grill is from a later model–50 or 51.

      The grille is 1950.

If you have ever watched the TV show “Cuban Chrome” you will see what he means……looks a lot like some of the Taxi’s you see down there, I think there is one just like this one on the show , same color and all

This was recently on the road, the wheels give it away. this car is way better than becoming a Cuban Taxi

Finally, a realistically priced barn find. This is one you could turn into a driver without breaking the bank and still have the right number of doors.

not a ’49 or a deluxe, actually a ’50 bel air, first year for the bel air and first 2dr hardtop for chevrolet.

Does that make it more or less expensive?

It,s a 50. The Grill, the tail light lenses (raised out in 50) the center hood chrome, the carb. the trunk handle and most of all the Bel Air body style was new in 1950.

It’s definitely a ’50 model. The grille doesn’t have the vertical dividers across the lower opening and the taillight lenses protrude at the top whereas the ’49 models lay flat. Looks like a good buy. Please remove the skirts though…

Ok Robert, after viewing this and also the 1941 Dodge Luxury Liner from yesterday which you wrote up – I have one word for you – it’s TRUNK – not truck. Nice finds by the way.

This is a 1950 Chevrolet with the correct grille. The 1951/52 Chevrolets had a different grille. Also, the trunk lift is that of a 1950 Chevrolet; the 1949 Chevrolet had a “handle” that you turned to open the trunk. As stated previously, this is rather “rare” Chevrolet as there was not a large number of two-door hardtops produced in 1950.

If this was on the West Coast I’d be all over it. 2 door hardtop WTH! I like the skirts too. I’m guessing but this looks customized. Color wrong and interior materials look like vinyl and the design of vertical tucks seem out of the early sixties. I’ve been to Cuba in the late nineties and these Chevys …some hardtop some 4 door were all over the place.

I would say more like turn it into a Mexican Lowrider, and give Cheech and Chong a call!!!!

…..you won’t find hardly anything original in a Cuban Taxi.
