1963 Jaguar E-Type: Hot Rod Brit

Jaguar E-Type

Though the Jaguar E-Type has always been cherished for its balance of performance and dignity, this fly yellow XKE Series 1 is clearly a cat of a different breed. Listed here on eBay with an optimistic $75,000 Buy-It-Now, this ’63 convertible has been modified with the obvious paint job but also a significantly lowered suspension – and who knows what else. Being a manual transmission model, it wouldn’t surprise me if it had a few more tricks up its sleeve that the seller hasn’t acknowledged in the listing. Of course, there’s always the chance the eBay page is a thinly-veiled advertisement for the entity that owns the many other potential projects in the background – scroll through the photos of the car from the other side and you’ll see French and British oddities in addition to the pack of Porsches in this photo. For what is clearly a non-original E-Type, the price seems high – but I’d likely be calling about the pistachio green 911 before I’d cast a bid on this bodacious Jag.

Great period green on the Porsche – I agree with you Jeff. By the looks of the vehicles in the background someone likes rear engine, rear wheel drive vehicles !

Front end can be lowered by (mis) adjusting the torsion bars. Rear can have shorter springs to alter ride height; but you can only go so far, as the halfshafts double as upper links.

seller has some interesting vehicles and parts listed on ebay. not sure about the prices, $4500 for a rear deck lid with spoiler! maybe i need to start parting out cars again. looking at the feedback seller seem to sell a lot of items at “best offer “. i too think based on the photo background they have a lot to sell that is not listed also. for a $75k listing i would hope the photos could be rotated so they are right side up! interesting ebayer and great find.

You got it wrong on the lowered suspension: as a longtime Jaguar repair / restore person I know that many people don’t know how to set up the torsion bars on E-Types and often get them set too low when they’ve done an engine out repair. The result is the drop-nose look this one displays. He wants way too much for the car but it looks honest; if improperly set up.

    Cheers,
    PJH

D’oh – should have known. My brother lowered his 911 modestly the same way. Thanks for letting us know.

Perfect early E-types are selling for 2 or 3 hundred thousand or more at high end auctions, especially the convertibles. If this one is as good as the seller claims, with a good underside and a running engine a year ago ago, it will be worth the asking to some people.

The question is, with all the special interest cars laying around and the seller’s level of activity in the reselling business, why didn’t he get that good looking engine running again yesterday and get the car up on a lift or a decent jack for underside photos?

Things that don’t look right always interest me.
Fairly pristine repainted exterior and polished chrome – but old dust and dirt on the seats and mis matched floormats ? One hour on the interior by the man who spent so many hours on the exterior would be more normal.

It just seem’s odd that the interior looks like it’s been sitting unloved for years and the exterior looks fresh and cared for.
