Convertible Dream’n: 1964 Chevy Impala SS

1964 Chevy Impala SS Convertible

When I first spotted this ’64 Impala SS convertible here on eBay, I thought we had another rust bucket on our hands! I then discovered, that while it does have some rust issues, it really isn’t that bad. Someone just spayed a patch work of brown primer on it, giving it the appearance of having considerably more rust than it actually does. Now that’s not saying it doesn’t have problems, but at least it’s sitting on its wheels rather than rusted around them.

Impala SS Convertible

I’ve always thought a convertible Impala SS would be fun! You could put the top down to enjoy the sounds of the 327 V8 while cruising on comfortable bucket seats. It really seems like the perfect balance of power, comfort and character. Let’s just hope this one is solid enough still for someone to actually get it back on the road someday soon!

Chevy Impala 327 V8

The 327 V8 is still under the hood and looks to be complete. It is the 250 horsepower model and should give this drop top plenty of get up and go! This is one of those rare finds that the seller has already taken the time to get the engine started.

Impala Convertible Trunk

As you can see, the trunk looks solid. There are a few rust spots showing that will need to be addressed, but they don’t look to bad in the pictures. For some reason, I keep wondering if this trunk hasn’t already had repairs made to it. The paint isn’t factory and a few of the floor panels look a bit off to me, so that will need a closer inspection for sure!

Before coughing up $9 grand, I would be sure to have this Impala inspected closely. It could be a solid project that’s well worth saving or a nightmare with rust lurking underneath. If it turns out to be solid, it will be a big project, but should be well worth the effort once you can put the top down and take it for a drive! So which would you rather have, this or the rusty 912?

The forward portion of the trunk floor – under the top well – has obviously been replaced. THAT is a major rust issue that demands further due diligence. Although I’d much prefer a ’63 in any color but white, all Impala convertibles have been on the endangered species list for decades. Hopefully, someone will grab this before any more amateur work is performed. This may be the final opportunity to obtain one this nice!

Smart move having the rust spayed. Anything I ever spayed never grew anymore………………

I can think of a young fellow named Baldo (comic strip character) Bermudez who’d go nuts over this.
