1965 Astra (Kellison) X-300 GT

The final iteration of the original Kellison coupe kit car body was the X-300 GT, which featured 2-1/2 more inches of headroom than the previous J-5 body and other design refinements, including a proprietary frame. This X-300 GT was never completed and is now offered for sale here on craigslist near Seattle, Washington, for $20,000.

By this point in time, the Astra bodies were being produced by the Fiberglass Products Company, and the X-300 GT was exclusive to that firm. You can read all about the Astra variations here on Geoff Hacker’s fantastic site Undiscovered Classics, but in summary, the X-300 GT was fitted with more Corvette components, roll-up windows, and the aforementioned raised roof.  Additionally, the dash, cockpit, and firewall were installed from the factory for ease of assembly.

It appears that some preparation work has been done on the body, although it’s hard for me to tell whether the majority color is gray primer or paint. In any case, the body seems to be free of the spiderwebbing and damage one typically finds on a 50+-year-old kit car body. The seller encourages those serious about purchasing the car to give them a call; I’m sure more details about the history of the body and the reasons for selling it at this point would be interesting!

Look at how far back the engine sits in this frame; for example, compare it to the location of the front wheel centerline of a Corvette. This must be good for weight distribution, and many Kellison/Astra bodies found their way onto competition cars. That’s probably the ultimate destination for this unfinished kit, but I’d love to hear what you would do with it! And a special thanks to Barn Finds reader Matt R. for submitting this cool find; apparently he likes the same kind of cars that I do as I’ve found myself writing up a lot of his submissions lately; keep up the good work, Matt!

Nice car and project priced about twice what it’s worth considering the vast majority of work is still ahead.

If you are a serious prospect for this car, wait a week or two – he may get NO calls as his phone number is obviously a typo – the area code shown does not exist . . . but is probably 425 as that is a Washington area code.
