1966 Porsche 912: Sunroof Special

Hard to believe something as simple as a sunroof could make a car stand out from the herd. But that’s the case being made for this 1966 Porsche 912 here on eBay with a starting bid of over $14,000 and no offers made. I don’t know how I feel about the potential for higher pricing due to the original owner checking an options box not many others did. I suppose it does make the car unique, but in terms of how “special” it is – and whether that justifies a higher price – well, that’s what the free market is for. I suppose if I was hell-bent on owning a 912, I might buy this one to set it apart from the others; then again, why not save up for a few more years and buy an actual 911, a car that will have better performance out of the box and likely increase in value more quickly (if that matters to you). Does a factory sunroof make you want to own this 912, or is it much ado about nothing?

Jeff do you think this owner forgot a zero?
    Rare Factory Porsche911 – $9900
If it is under 10k then you should get this one, what do you think?

I am not sure it makes sense to restore it. Kind of looks to me that the cost maybe greater then it’s resorted value. Also it cost almost as much to restore a 911 as a 912 the cost of the body work and trim will be the same. Also it does not have the correct engine. Running 912 maybe fun, to buy.

“I have been upgrading this car for years”
    – You think it’s bad now, you should have seen it before. And it’s been carefully stored, too.

“I have the front suspension off to upgrade to Turbo tie rods”
    – Yep, definitely one of the necessities for an early short wheelbase 912 with a fraction of the torque of a Turbo. And unlike every other car on the planet, this one is so special that the whole front suspension had to be off to do the job right. Sorry….the new owner will just have to sort that all out.

“You can install the engine and transaxle of your choice”
    – My choice would be the engine and transaxle that the Porsche factory installed, the ones identified on the Porsche COA. But that’s not going to happen.

Some Porsche guru said he has seen only two factory 912 sunroof cars in 40 years.
    – That plus a big pile of money, work, and parts including a complete drivetrain will make this car special once again.
I sincerely apologize for any cynicism contained in these comments, which was not planned in advance and ‘just happened’.
