19,678 Mile Stepside: 1972 Chevrolet C10

The beloved Chevrolet C10 is a truck that has established its place in history from its classic good looks, and length of production. This 1972 Stepside is thought to be a true survivor in what appears to be miraculous condition. Certainly a lovely truck, this 19,678 mile truck is offered for the buy it now price of $26,000! Check it out here on eBay out of Washington, New Jersey. Thanks to reader Patrick S for this lovely C10 submission!

Although this C10 isn’t powered by a V8, the 250 cubic inch inline 6 is a solid runner that is backed up by a 3 speed manual transmission. In ready to drive condition, this low mileage truck looks to need nothing. The seller has reported that the radiator is not original, and that the front bumper has been replaced as well.  I imagine the original radiator became blocked from this truck sitting a long time.

Like an ocean of sea foam green, the interior is in fabulous condition and certainly looks new.  There are a few wrinkles here and there on the bench seat, and the steering wheel is very nice, but still has a crack or two from aging. The gauge cluster panel is crisp and clean, and the needles on the gauges are not faded. Overall this interior is a real gem.

Examining the photos, the exterior has a crisp and clean appearance with no visible flaws to be seen in the body work. I imagine that there could be a few rock chips on the front end, and perhaps even a minor ding here or there since the front bumper was replaced for some unknown reason. Despite the replaced bumper and radiator, the seller claims this truck to be otherwise original. Almost too good to be true, do you think this C10 is original as the owner claims?

Now THIS is a truck, not a luxury car with an open trunk like modern trucks.

Dang! When I was like 6 or 7 years old, this would have been my dream truck. Lifted and 4WD, but a short bed step side.

Back then, I use to make drawings about such things, on a daily basis!

Beautiful truck nice find. It looks to good to be true but I don’t see anything that would make me dispute that this isn’t original. The only thing I am not sure about is the wood. Were these factory painted as it appears they were. Also I would put the original rims back on as these don’t do the truck any justice. Pricey but probably worth it.

    FWIW…
As much as I’d like to believe this is a 19K mile truck:
    a. the engine compartment shows much more use than 19K
    b. The wood would not have been “washed” with paint from the factory
    c. Door latches would not have been painted by the factory
Not to say it isn’t a nice looking truck, just that it’s not original and although maybe not “restored” per the sellers claims, it certainly has been painted and refurbish beyond what the seller would like potential buyers to believe. Bring a magnet and look deeper than that fresh shiny paint…

Nice truck, but not worth the asking price. Stout engine, would like different paint…blue maybe, but not this shade of green.

I like it and yes it is one of the nicest designed Chevy trucks GM put out but not 26K worth, maybe just maybe if it was a 4×4 with a v8 and a 4 speed he might get that asking price.

I’m really thinking it has had a paint job isn’t that another reason to add to the list of 1st things replaced was radiator and bumper then I bet paint job as well???

I have restored two and parted out a few 67-72 Chevy/ GMCs (current project is a 70 “Longhorn”) and I have never seen an original paint truck with painted door latches. Im not saying it isnt possible, just my experience. He painted wood bed floor is correct, though. Pretty rare to see original wood.

Steve, it would take to much time to remove the door latches or tape them off. It’s only a $26000.00 truck.//////

Agreed! I’m calling BS on original paint. I’ve owned 13 of these trucks, plus 2 Blazers. I currently have 4, including a 66k mile 68 model that my aunt purchased new. I’ve also parted out a dozen or more 67-72’s, & I have never encountered painted latches or strikers.

I grew up with these trucks, & they were never this shiny when new. To me, there appears to be overspray on the hose leading to the passenger side windshield washer nozzle. I also see overspray on the driver side engine mount. And is it just me, or does that steering wheel look blue?

I’m gonna nitpick on the clamps on the radiator hoses, they should all be tower clamps. The top hose has GM markings, so why were the clamps changed unless the hose is a repop? The tower clams on the heater hoses may have come that way, but I’ve always seen constant tension band clamps on them. For a 19k mile truck, why has the steel fuel line been cut & an inline filter put in?

I wish the seller would have posted a pic of the SPID. This is a very low option truck, with radio & lighter delete. I may be wrong on the seat cover, but it looks like a repop also. The front bumper would have come white.

This truck appears to be a nicely restored truck, not a maintained original it’s being passed off as.

I agree with you Tyler. I have a 68 sitting in my garage now, purchased it new. I did what you did, looked at the door latches, mine not painted, looked at the door latch rollers, mine not painted, no overspray on my truck. I have 68000miles on mine, original paint which does not shine like the one in the Ad. This is a nice truck, just say what was done to it. Are we suppose to get mad if the vehicle was repainted. Hell no. Just state the facts. I do think the price is a little high. Just my opinion.

Totally agree. We had a ’68 in the mid 70s and the paint was never that good looking. Even if you kept this in your living room at 72 degrees on the shag carpet for the last 46 years, it wouldn’t look this good.

I totally agree with you, Tyler. The paint NEVER looked this nice from new. The seat has new upholstery, hence, the wrinkles. Nonetheless, a very nice example, but it seems either that the seller is not aware of the “enhancements”, or he’s not being putting all of his cards on the table. Let’s see the inside of the bed. The tale will be told.

Back in the mid 90’s my now deceased brother (his 69 camaro indy pace car was featured on this site a few years ago) stumbled across a similar 72 c10, coincidentally with 19k miles. It was a lwb fleetside, but had the 402 bbc, th400,ac, ps and pb. Still had the original tires hub caps belts and hoses and clamps. It was that funky light yellow color. Paid $700 for it. A custom cabinet shop bought it to pull their trailer to jobs. Story was When the gas crunch hit, it was parked. They parked it under the dust discharge and used it to haul that and scrap wood. It was not well cared for. The bed was beyond repair. We were able to drop a battery in it and drive it home. Rode and drive pretty Tight with no rattles and the ac blew ice cold. The radiator support inner and outer fender were rusted out from the battery leaking. We went to anlocal chevy dealer and they still had the parts in stock. We found a used bed and he lainted it corvetter yellow. (I thought it should have been repainted the stock color). He installed a set of rally wheels and radials since we didnt trust the ild stock tires. We installed new belts and hoses. We kept the old ones. He got $10,000 for it around 2000. I came across it on a forum a few years back. A huy bought it from the guy we sold it to and pulled all the stock parts off the engine and installed headers aluminum intake and other junk. Next he was going to cut the bEd and frame to make it a swb. What a waste. I like swb truck over lwb, but it was such annice original truck. Funniest thing was the original owners special ordered the truck as a “stripper” but with the bbc, auto, ac ps and pb, but with a coil spring rear. He still had the original paperwork and paid MORE for it than the black 72 cheyenne c10 lwb that my uncle bought new. He bought it off the lot at AJ Foyt chevrolet in Houston and it had everything that the yellow truck had, plus the cheyenne trim/ chrome as well as the bedside tool box and tilt wheel. My other brother owns it now.

Ironically, my deceased brother sold the yellow 72 to pay for his wedding. He also sold an 87 monte carlo ss aerocoupe, 62 bel air “bubble top” 61 impala sport coule and 72 hurst olds to pay for the wedding his wife wanted. They were divorced about five years later.

A lesson to be learned there, for sure.

I am NOT a fan of huge “show off” “fairy tale” weddings. A total waste of money.

Sorry to hear about your brother’s passing. I hope that he had much fun and satisfaction after he was free from the gold-digger.

Same here. He wasnt either. He was trying to keep his wife happy. Luckily i found a girl who wasnt into that sort of thing either. I spend more money than she does (hotrod car truck and farmall tractor parts)!

Beauty, eh? If someone asked me to describe the 1970’s, I would show them this truck.

Wide radials and no power steering. This thing would be a bear to drive. Turns at speed would be OK but, trying to park or any low speed maneuvering would be a chore.
A friend just added power steering to his 1956 Chevrolet station wagon after muscling it around for 30+ years. He said his arms were wore out after a day of cruising around. I think driving this would be the same story.

Nice truck if it is original paint the front bumper could have just been changed because it matched the painted rear bumper and the chrome one is allot nicer.

I have a 70 GMC and a 71 Chevy sitting outside, I looked at both and the GMC is all original latches are black truck is mustard. The Chevy has been resprayed and of course they painted the latches same as the body. Doors would be painted before they were assembled. So I’ll leave it up to the next owner to decide if the sellers claims are true. Seems like every old vehicle is low miles, odd since the odometer rolls over at 100k . Enjoy the story’s love the cars . Keep em coming.

This is a 68 GMC I’ve been working on for a little over 5 years now, receiving a frame off restoration. It was the service truck for the local GMC dealer until 1995. It was then driven by family members until it was parked in 2005, & remained that way till I purchased it in 2012. It has a 292 & 4 speed.

Thanks, Steve, for the pic of this beautiful ’72. I’m a “dyed in the wool” Ford guy, but I would show this truck with an ear to ear smile. Dang, this thing is beautiful ! Absolutely perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing ! I would drive this truck ‘cross country, and be mighty proud.

Beautiful truck Steve! And looks a little familiar.

This is the 67 I’m currently building for my wife. I installed a 5.3 & 4l60, hoping to have it completed in time to drive to Cruising the Coast in Biloxi in October.

Im with everyone here, resprayed, and what would you replace the front bumper with chrome when the original was white. Im no GM guy but when did GM put rims like those on their trucks. I call BS

To be clear, I like the truck & wouldn’t mind owning it. My problem is not with the truck but with the seller, who is totally misrepresenting the truck. He may simply not know the difference & is repeating the story he was told, or he is an unscrupulous shyster hoping to stick it to some poor unsuspecting soul that doesn’t know the difference.

I love this generation of C10’s. I learned to drive in my father’s 71 K10, & the for vehicle I drove legally after getting my license was a 71 Blazer. I don’t mind that the truck is not original, it looks to be nicely redone. But even if it were as claimed, $26k is a stretch for a 6 cylinder, 3 speed truck with no options.

This is my 66k mike 68 model. It was purchased new by my aunt & was used on the farm. I did convert it to disc brakes & power steering.

Agree with your theory, but you’d have to have very little care and knowledge to think that 46 year old paint could look like that today.

I have a 69 C10 that I bought off the Navy Base auction in Arizona back in 1979. Tyler, it has the same spare wheel cut out on the left rear fender just as yours does. There were 4 identical 69 C10 Stepside’s in a row, all in that Navy gray (or white?) color, all with just over a 100k. It was a “$1200 pick the one you want and take it with you” deal. I did just that and drove it home to PA where it still is today. It now has 270k on the original 250, 3-on-the-tree, and 3:73 12-bolt posi; all as ordered by the Navy new. I enjoyed the many comments here on this particular Barn Find. Nice to hear the many ‘good for a change’ story’s of how it is to have a passion for this series of the Chevy C10.
