1968 Chevrolet Chevelle With Fresh Drivetrain

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you’ve been waiting for a solid, drivable muscle car project with all the expensive work already done, this 1968 Chevy Chevelle might be your next great find. Described as a Southern car, this black-over-black coupe benefits from a newly installed engine and transmission, a long list of mechanical upgrades, and thousands spent in recent months. You can check it out here on eBay, where the seller also notes the new powerplant includes a transferable three-year warranty from Engines Direct.

A clean, rust-free body from a dry climate is always a major plus, and pairing that with a freshly built drivetrain makes this Chevelle especially appealing to someone looking for a usable project. The seller claims the car runs, drives, and stops as it should thanks to new disc brakes, a fresh master cylinder, brake lines, and numerous suspension updates—including new inner and outer tie rods. The car also rides on new wheels and tires, which should give peace of mind for anyone planning to start racking up the miles.

Power comes from a crate motor, covered by a three-year transferable warranty, according to the ad, mated to a new automatic transmission. Additional recent updates include a new gas tank, fuel lines, and carburetor. The interior has also been redone, making this a turnkey classic that’s much more than a rolling shell or shop-bound project. In fact, the current owner seems to have built the car with reliability and usability in mind, emphasizing its ability to drive and function like a true daily driver.

While details on trim level, engine specs, and originality are limited, this Chevelle appears to be a driver-quality build that prioritizes enjoyment over correctness. Whether you choose to complete the cosmetics, repaint, or just enjoy it as-is, there’s a lot to like about this sorted A-body.

Would you leave the black-on-black sleeper look, or turn this Chevelle into a show-stopper?

I agree. 68 Chevelle was my second car. I remember the rust holes that developed at the lip of the rear fenders….on all of them. I also remember how impossible it was to perfect that pretty complex lip with bondo.

There are pictures of it looks like one rear wheel well in a previous auction which can be found by scrolling down the eBay listing to the sellers other items, clicking on that, then clicking on filter then scrolling down to completed items. Picture number 5 of 10 shows an up close picture of the drivers rear wheel well, which looks more than sketchy.

At the cars current high bid, I’d want to see it in person.

That might be a fender I worked on.

Why not include engine and trans specs?

A lot of patina for a “newly installed engine”.

Is this a true 138 car? I see SS badges on the front.
