The late 1960s saw a flurry of muscle cars enter the scene. The two of the most memorable were the Pontiac GTO and (later) the Plymouth Road Runner. As a companion to the upscale GTX, the Road Runner was more of a budget-minded performance car with a catchy name and graphics along with a distinctive horn (Meep. Meep! This second-year Road Runner is a total project car that’s missing its engine and trunk lid (and probably much more). It looks to have been sitting alongside a barn/garage where Mother Nature has been slowly whittling away at it. Located in Wallingford, Connecticut, this once-blue Mopar is available here on eBay where a single bid of $3,000 has been cast.
After a successful launch of 44,600 units in 1968, Plymouth nearly doubled the production output to 82,300 in 1969. That included the addition of a convertible that wasn’t on the agenda the first year. The engine selected most by buyers was the 383 cubic inch V8 with an automatic transmission, which appears to have been the case for the seller’s car. But the engine has long since taken flight and we assume that’s true for the TorqueFlite, too.
From the looks of things, this Road Runner was left outside some time back and parts and pieces started disappearing off of it. The blue paint was used up long again, and the interior looks as though the windows were left down and small woodland creatures took up residence. No claim is made regarding the structural health of the auto, and bringing this vehicle back from the brink will be an arduous and expensive project. Would it better serve as a parts donor for another car, as long as the hood, fenders, and doors are worth saving?
Yes…this is a parts car all day long. To bring this Runner back to life the new owner would have to have very deep pockets! Not worth it!! The one bid at $3,000 holds would be the deal. If this gets crazy high ..nope!! Whoever gets this… good luck on your project! 🐻🇺🇸
Correct, a parts car. It is already being parted out as you can see. The trunk lid is gone and that is of value since the 69 RR trunk lid is one year only and not available in the aftermarket. The doors and hood are already rusty so why bother? If it had an Air Grabber mechanism the would be of value but I doubt it does. The bucket seats do not look like 69 RR seats. So not much left that is worth any effort.
Not only the trunk lid, but it also looks like every gauge, every button and every switch has been removed from the dash. Also missing is the left rear wheel. I agree with you.. this is what the seller had left over after parting it out.
You are correct the bucket seats are not Road Runner seats, they are 1969-70 Mustang Mach1 seats. The red stripe is a dead give away.
Wow, left outside to rot. And the Caddy convertible too????!!!
I figured the Caddy would come up in the very first post. lol.
Wile E. Coyote could catch this road runner without even trying.
Road Runner “meep meep” the coyote just passed you .. Road Runner, you’re rusted through and through
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
This is a basket case . You would be bankrupt trying to revive this one…
In the shape that one’s in, $3k is pushing it! IMO.
Funny how the Cadillac is also missing the trunk although it looks far more savable than the Road Runner does.
Just looked at Sellers other items and the Cadillac is also on eBay for $5,000 or best offer. It has zero interior but all in all it looks like it would be a lot easier to save it even has a motor and transmission in it and looks like it would be a pretty nice car to put back together if somebody really wanted to do it. Check out sellers other items and you can see it.
Who leaves a Road Runner outside? I just don’t believe some people. I’m not responding directly to you Davey Boy, although I agree with you. This RR is a lost cause. It really irkes me when I see these at one time beautiful cars go to waste and rust out. When we were kids we would have killed to have one but like most kids we were excessively broke! I can still hear the 383’s and 389’s(Pontiac) roaring and the tires smoking. I’m 70 and still can’t afford one! Lol!!
Pretty sure I sent this in along with one even worse! Thanks for the Shout out.
If the owner decides to leave the Road Runner and the Caddy outside, makes me wonder what’s in the garage.
The GTO was around before the late 60’s.
WOW power to seller trying but if I were him I would take that 3 k bid and run
Dented bumper and front fenders rusty hood and quarters no engine trans or rear end steel front wheels trashed interior what is actually there for parts use even? I guess VIN is worth more than I imagined
Something I notice that to me is pretty amazing. No trunk lid but according to the not so great pictures, the trunk pan doesn’t appear to.be rusted. In the rust belt of America, you would expect to see holes in this car. A close up inspection may show you a diamond in the rough! Truly amazed that the trunk isn’t rusted thru!!! Still it would take a lot to fix up but if you have a motor and tranny it may not in the end!!
I agree with you. It wouldn’t take much to get it on the road. The sheetmetal isn’t rotted, the seat frames are there, the dash can be restored easily because it’s non-rally. I would leave the paint alone for now.
except lower rear quarters and maybe the lower doors?.. I have a door and dash pieces, 440 or 426 hemi engines and trannys so no biggy.
Memory…scrap
