Potentially Good Buy: 1969 Pontiac Firebird

General Motors fielded two new “pony cars” in 1967, the Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. They would do battle with the sensational Ford Mustang and the Mercury Cougar (the latter also debuted in 1969). This ’69 Firebird has been undergoing a restoration for several years and the mechanical side may already be done, leaving cosmetics to the buyer. A tip brought to us by Tommy T-Tops, this Poncho is in Holmdel, New Jersey, runs, and can be driven home once purchased here on craigslist.

The third year of the Firebird got a styling refresh just like the Chevy Camaro. But, unlike the Camaro, Firebird sales went down from 1969 compared to 1968. The Chevy sales had grown due to a 15-month production cycle as the all-new 1970s were delayed in coming to market. That same delay would have also affected the Firebird, which shared the same platform. Out of 87,000 Firebirds assembled in 1969, 60% had a 350 cubic inch V8 like the seller’s Pontiac.

This Firebird has been a work in progress for years and the seller admits the photos provided are six years old. So, they may not represent the condition of the car today, particularly the body which had some sheet metal rust in 2017 which has not been repaired. The interior looks good, but the red paint is past being saved.

We’re told this was an original car once work began, so the drivetrain you see in the pics should be what you’ll find today. The refreshed (but not rebuilt) 350 V8 is paired with a TH-400 automatic transmission. It was fitted with a 2-barrel carburetor which would make it slightly more efficient on gasoline consumption. The Pontiac has power drum brakes, power steering, and factory air conditioning. The seller goes through a whole list of new parts, which includes the oil pump, timing chain, water pump, brakes, and a ton more. Since we’re told it runs, we assume that if you fix the rust and paint, you’ll have a viable weekend cruiser.

A great project and at a great price. I love these first-generation Firebirds and Camaros. This one is too far away from me to be considered, but it looks like a great project. I wish the new owners luck.
