1969 Pontiac GTO “Johnny Lightning”

I’m sure many of you collect die cast model cars as well as the full-size ones. I literally bought some cases to store mine in this morning! I’ll bet you even have some “wish” die casts where you would love to have the full-size version. Well, now is your chance! This 1969 Pontiac GTO was used as the subject for Johnny Lightning to produce an exact replica as a 1/64 scale die cast car. It’s listed for sale here on craigslist and was submitted to us by Ikey H. The asking price is $31,500 (for the full-size version).

Here’s what the die cast model looks like. The seller assures us that the car in the ad was Bobby Chestnut’s and that there are records proving that. One thing to note is that although the font is wrong on the model, it wears the same text on the white letter tires that the real car shows in the pictures.

You may wonder about the “Hurst Equipped” badge on the left rear. Apparently at some time in the past a Hurst “His and Hers” dual gate shifter was installed to replace the stock one. Apart from that the car appears stock, but I would appreciate an under hood and detailed interior picture — the seller says they will provide additional information or pictures upon request.

The only other picture we have to look at is this blurry trunk shot (which does appear quite nice). Although there were 58,126 1969 GTOs produced, I’ll bet there aren’t many others with their own die cast! As it turns out, valuations for these cars aren’t far off the asking price, so if you really crave having your own full-size model car, this might be the one for you. Tell me about your die cast collections in the comments (pictures would be great too!)

I have a real B5 Blue AAR ‘cuda with brilliant blue interior and two almost identical models of the same car: a 1/18th scale ERTL model and a Hot Wheels version. Only difference is that the models have a black vinyl roof while the real one doesn’t.

I have a 1969 Pontiac Trans Am and a matching die cast car. Both with the blue interior.

This was #1 in that 6-car set from Johnny Lightning circa 2004, where “You Car is The Star”. My 71 Hurst SSJ GP was used as #6.

I didn’t collect die-cast cars but my Brother and I did collect AFX cars, and we have nearly every Aurora and Tomy AFX car ever built along with variations and mistakes. All of these cars will go to my GrandSons that like racing AFX cars on their 67.5ft layout more than racing on their electronic devices. Aurora and Tomy did make copies of many real race cars so maybe one of my Boys will end up with the real deal later in life.

You may not believe this but I owned a gold ’69

GTO when I was young ole way back in ’76. It

looked exactly like this car. Talk about nostalgia.

This brought back some memories. Thanks for

posting. I’ll be looking for the JL version, for sure

Back in Sept. ’64, I ordered a Montero (sp.) red ’65 GTO, sight unseen. The dealer didn’t have any brochures, with pictures. I was originally interested in a ’64 Tempest Lemans.
The salesman said, for another $200, I could get the Goat, which is what I did.
Hey, I was 20 yrs. old. What did I know? Haha. Best decision I ever made.
Paid $3200 OTD. I traded in my white “58 Pontiac Chieftain convert.
I have models of both cars.
I’m still kicking myself for selling the GTO, in ’69. Despite the first year of the GTO, back in ’64, the ’65 had a totally different design. It was also the first year they had the vertical headlights. I wasn’t disappointed.
Since I’m not a paid member of Barn Finds, is there a way I could attach pics, of both cars, here??

I was in High School when these came out, and it really irritated me that they didn’t put an Endura on the back as well as the front. Also, there was a girl with one like this a class ahead of me, and I wasn’t getting a ride in it…

I didn’t care for the later model GTOs. And I thought the Judge was ugly. Don’t jump on my case. Just personal preference.
funny thing…. A while ago, they tried to bring back the GTO & old style T Bird.
That didn’t last long. Times & tastes have changed.

I am Bobby Chestnut. I owned that 1969 GTO this story was about. Would love to talk to you about the story on it. What is really weird is that both that GTO and a 1971 454 LS5 Corvette I owned both were bought by people in Beaumont Texas and were both there at the same time. 812-309-8388 Bobby Chestnut

I have three different die cast models, of my ’65 GTO. Two red and one black.
