1970 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe 400 V8

I don’t know if I’ve seen a Camaro Gold Chevy Impala before but I must have. It’s a pretty luxurious color but it fits this car well. This 1970 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe isn’t perfect but for anyone who is looking for a big two-door with a big V8, this is it. The seller has it listed here on eBay in Lexington, Oklahoma, there is no reserve, and the current bid is a mere $3,350.

The seller says this car is wearing a non-factory hood but the original – which had some fitment issues – comes with the sale. There is some rust to deal with on this car, but it sounds like they’re related to the floor pans rather than the body. The fourth-generation Impala from late 1964 for the 1965 model year until the end of the 1970 model year in a variety of body styles.

This is a Custom Coupe with a slightly squared-off C-pillar, whereas the Sport Coupe has more of a sloped look to it. I’m a pool or pond guy, either one would work very nicely for me but I’ve always had a thing for more angular/square cars, like a notchback vs. a fastback, so I’d have to go with a Custom Coupe first.

The seats were recovered several years ago and they look good, or the front seat does, we don’t see the back seat. The carpet has been removed and that’s where they mention some rust work will be needed, on the floors. New carpet is also included and is shown in the photos, so after the rust is fixed, it’ll look nice once again. The trunk is reportedly free of pesky rust but it’s showing surface rust as are the floors in some of the photos, I wish we could see underneath. The horn and fuel gauge aren’t working, just a heads up.

Other than just looking like a really nice car, this one has a 400-cu.in. OHV V8, which would have had 265 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The seller says that it’s backed by a THM 400 automatic (I assumed a THM-350) and a 12-bolt rear end. You can drive this one home and you won’t have any leaks in your driveway, according to the seller. This looks like a nice weekend cruiser that you can keep tinkering with to make it as perfect as you want. Any thoughts on this ’70 Impala?

I’d like to have this one. Even with its rust issues. I have a 90 caprice, and setting them next to each other would be cool. Only thing better, would to have both in the same color.

Seems more reasonable, price wise, than most of the classic vintage cars I’ve seen here. Can’t really blame anyone for trying to get the most for their vehicles. It’s just, there have been so many, that the rust is the only thing holding them together, and some will just bid stupid on them. LOL.

Someone probably paid a lot of money to have the seats upholstered in the wrong fabric and the wrong colors. That’s unfortunate. Reproduction upholstery is available.

This one hurts. I bought a turquoise coupe back in the mid 90s. One owner, 350 with power glide. The car had ac, ps, p disc brakes, power windows, seat, tilt wood wheel, am fm, trunk release, and power locks. The car had the same type wheels but with different center caps. On the way back from having new exhaust installed a young girl in a Geo Metro runs a stop sign at a road that is 55mph. I swerved and missed her by inches. I then had to hard left to avoid a pole. A wet road sent this unit sliding. I pulled it back to avoid the state trooper coming south bound but ultimately lost over the embankment where it landed on the passenger side. She received a few tickets the trooper complimented me for not hitting him or anything one else. My head and knees hurt from flying around but what really hurt was the trooper said,” it’s just an old Chevy. Insurance paid crap for the car and every time I see one an old wound opens.

That’s too bad about that gorgeous turquoise ’70 Impala. Even though it’s a car I’ve obviously never seen, I still say this about it. And considering what all happened and what all came of it your responses are all appropriate. If it were me, that one open wound that would never go away. 30+ years could even go by, and it would still be like yesterday to me in some ways. And according to what I read here, I still don’t see where that trooper got off issuing you citations (for anything) and then saying what he said. I had a similar thing happen to me in my 2012 Mustang after owning it for almost 9 years since new. smashed by a negligent driver on late Saturday afternoon of Sept. 26, 2020. That year was starting to turn into a good year from not so good a year for 7 months of it. Then this happened, instant total loss. I don’t think I’ll EVER get over all that.

No a/c, no A.I.R, no Turbo Fire sticker on the air cleaner, no timing sticker on the radiator support.

The 70 impala is underrated for its styling. Maybe the most perfect year.

I’m a big fan of this body cycle. I prefer the ’69 with hide away headlights though. Also would prefer a big block too… but, who wouldn’t?!?!… lol. I’d still rock the doors off this one though. I think it’s a great driver if you just rust abate the floors and put some patch panels in… rhino liner on the chassis and underbody and drive the piss out of it.

This was a popular car, at least where I grew up. I was working for a Chevrolet dealer in 1970. These would get sold as fast as they came in.

Even without A/C this would make a nice summer cruiser. That non-original hood appears to fit well, so I would leave it. If it’s running well, enjoy it now and restore later. With its needs I wouldn’t pay more than $6K because of the lack of options other than that 400.

The Custom coupe was a good look in ’69-’70. Crisp and clean that looks good with the the windows down and your girl by your side. Fill ‘er up and put it in Drive.

In contrast to the last few 68 Chargers on this site, this car is rust free. At least you don’t need a scanner to fix it.
