1972 Ford F-250 That Clint Eastwood Drove In “The Mule”

I’ve been a Clint Eastwood fan since his Rowdy Yates days on the Rawhide TV Show, so I couldn’t pass this one up. It seems like ole Clint has had a thing for 1972 Fords in a few of his movies. 2008’s Gran Torino featured both a sweet ’72 Gran Torino (that Clint ended up buying) and an old, squeaky ’72 F-100 pickup that his grumpy character, Walt Kowalski, used as a daily driver. And 2018’s The Mule featured this “weathered” 3/4 ton 1972 Ford F-250 (but remember this is Hollywood, so don’t be surprised if most of that rust is fake). Yep, Clint drove this pickup in the movie about Earl Stone, a broke, alone, down-and-out elderly man who ends up taking a job as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. And since nobody would suspect a 90-year-old man driving a beat-up pickup would be smuggling drugs, it was easy money for Earl’s new retirement plan. Currently located in Orange, California, this rolling piece of movie memorabilia (Clint even autographed the glove box) is for sale here on eBay for an asking price of $58,000. Reasonable offers will also be entertained.

The seller doesn’t share a lot of history or details about this truck but is quick to point out that “the body is extremely straight and the rust is actually ‘Movie Patina’ painted on for the movie and the truck is NOT rusty!”  All of the rear window stickers and bumper stickers are as seen in the movie and we’re told they have sentimental value as they represent things from Clint Eastwood’s many movies. Two options I spot are the rear step bumper and what Ford called western mirrors. I remember these two-toned brown and yellow Ford pickups when they were new. That color combination is very reflective of the times.

There are a few photos of the truck’s interior, and based on those it looks pretty clean and in good shape for its 50-year-old age. It’s anybody’s guess what the bench seat actually looks like. The brown seat cover on the bench seat is a nice touch and based on movie stills, it also hasn’t changed from when Clint was driving it and making “deliveries.”

Under that “patina” brown hood, the seller shares that the F-250 has the optional 360-cubic-inch V8 that’s paired with an automatic transmission. The seller claims the truck runs great and lists 74, 578 miles on the clock. The asking prices for movie cars (or cars tied to the rich and famous) are subjective and usually stir some kind of debate. Who knows, maybe there’s a huge Clint Eastwood fan willing to pay a well-above-average price so they can sit in the same seat and drive the same pickup that their Hollywood hero did. I’ll be curious to see what happens.

Here’s a shot of the truck as seen in “The Mule”.

One of the few movie car or truck I would actually pay more to own. I don’t have 58G to throw around but I would be tempted BC it’s been driven by the legend himself. It may be a 72 but that truck has the 1 year only 70 grill installed.

I have been a Clint Eastwood fan most of my life, but for a $58K investment, you would have to ask yourself “Do ya’ feel lucky, punk?”

Actually yes, if I owned a piece of Clint Eastwood memorabilia I would be. Sign me up for his green Torino as well.

To pay $58k for a ’72 F250? I have to be taking some of those drugs that Clint was importing.

The stickers on the rear window seem to match up.

Why is there a 1970 front grill?

It was a movie and all they needed was a truck. If it wasn’t totally original it wasn’t a problem for them.

I like the 72 gran Torino better. I used to have a 73 years ago, with about 50 thousand miles. Was a nice car.

If it was the same truck from Every which way but loose and Heartbreak Ridge and Bridges of Madison County and Gran Torino and even The Mule $58g is still way too much.
Even if Clint delivered it to me in my driveway!
