1974 Dodger Charger 440 Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

With Chrysler’s redesign of its B-bodied intermediates in 1971, the Charger took on an all-new look. That helped to lead to a record sales year in 1973. With few changes in 1974, sales dropped by more than one-third – perhaps due to rising gasoline prices and the car’s image as a performance machine. The seller’s ’74 Charger has a 440 cubic inch V8, the last year it would be offered in the Charger as the product moved to more of a personal luxury car persona. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, this Mopar looks fairly good, yet the seller describes it as a project without explanation. It’s available here on craigslist for $18,000 and is another tip brought to us by T.J.!

The third generation of the Charger enjoyed a run from 1971 to 1974. After a solid outing in 73, Dodge left the car alone in ’74, only changing paint colors and interior patterns. Just V8 power was offered, including the 318, 360 (replacing the 340), 400, and the big boy, 440 cubic inches. While a 4-speed manual transmission was still available, most Chargers came with the TorqueFLite automatic. The original owner of this Charger went big time and opted for the 440.

We’re told this Dodge is a “barn find” but it hardly looks like one. The body, paint (mostly), vinyl top, and interior all look okay for what may be 175,000 miles (the odometer has turned over). It’s rust-free and the seller says is 95% complete (what does the other 5% include?). It has a spoiler that looks like an aftermarket part.

The car doesn’t seem to run, and all the seller says is that it “won’t take much to get this on the road.” Considering the asking price, I’d want to know about the vehicle’s mechanical health before taking the plunge. Sales for 1974 added to just under 75,000 units. This body style is said to be one of NASCAR legend Richard Petty’s favorites.

Buyer beware…Not Phoenix area code nor Phoenix area pictures. Also, no bulge hood.

I had the 73 Charger SE with the 400. I had just entered the military and bought it as my First New Car ( I still had the 66 SS 396 my Dad gave me ). As a New Car it’s first chore was to leave some rubber on almost every street that night. Beautiful Cars, great lines, to bad the power had been cut so Drastically. The SE was the so. Allen ” Luxury model ” ( But I was still paying more for insurance , than the price of the car ! )

I bought a 73 SE used in Norwich CT in 1978. A sailor had traded it in.
Came from HI. 26K clean miles. Also a 400. Still looking for 1 I could afford to buy and put Gas in. I only got 9MPG.

I have no interest in this, but I am pretty curious about your comments. I live in the Phoenix area but my area code is Oregon, (you know, cell phone) and what would make you think that the pictures aren’t Phoenix? We actually have trees, shrubs and such.
