It’s been a while since I’ve written up an “honest truck.” I use that term to describe a pickup that is still very useful, maybe a little rough around the edges, but still with plenty of life left, and this 1974 F-250 fits that description. It’s listed for sale here on eBay, with current bidding up to $6,700 as I write. There’s not a whole lot of time left in the auction, so be sure and get your bid in now! The truck is currently with a dealer that specializes in older 4x4s in Marsing, Idaho.
The listing states that the Ford runs and drives great and that all of the dash gauges and lights work correctly. Unfortunately, there is some rust on the driver’s door and in the bed, but the seller has non-matching but rust-free replacements that they are willing to install along with the purchase of the truck, although it’s not clear whether that is included in the purchase price or not. It will be up to the new buyer whether they want to give up the original paint or not. What would you do? I’m going for the non-rusty panels, but that may just come from way too much British car rust in my life.
The underside of the truck looks even better than the outside. It must be nice to own a vehicle that you don’t even need a lift to work on! It looks like the transfer case has a bit of a leak, so I would want to address that before working the truck too hard.
If you’re thinking about buying this “honest truck,” remember that along with a manual transmission, it also has manual steering! With that heavy V-8, 4×4 drive train and a long bed, this truck is going to be all kinds of fun to park!
The original 360 cubic-inch V-8 is still under the hood, and while it will certainly use up a lot of gas doing so, it should pull the truck along (and anything reasonable you want to tow) quite nicely. Do any of you use this kind of truck on a regular basis? Share your experiences with us!
The door jamb has been painted so I doubt this is original paint. At least not the door. The VIN tag has been changed so likely the door was replaced – likely with one that had more rust than the rest of the truck since it’s pretty clean otherwise. I would take both replacements and get this thing repainted and re-upholstered. Nice looking project.
almost perfect. One of my very fav lookin vehicles (even over many ‘cars”) still a hiboy. Perfection (4 me) would B a step side, short bed 4WD w/this NP435 (might even put 2 18 inch wide race stripes on) 8^ 0
carry the white panel around onto the tail gait, 33 inch BFG T/A KO (may B on some ‘white wagons’) clean up the rust, try’n fit one of those curb side under tool boxes in and go get some wrk done…
Great trucks. Ive had three F250s like this and drove each for 100K in my ownership. I think this one has 157K, not the claimed 57K just looking at the condition of everything. I also would not go so far as to claim it is largely rust free. It is largely rusted, with only a couple areas rusting thru, but the others will come thru. The replacement bed is a good plan since the rear fenders are the first to go and the beds are hard to find anymore. The 360 is a good motor. I think you could expect 10-12 mpg. This has an aux tank too which is nice to have on these. Good solid $7500 truck.
Wish I had the cash available. Swap on the solid body sections, take care of the leak, recover the seat, & install an inexpensive (but modern) stereo. Get with a buddy of mine that’s a pretty good automotive painter to get it all in 1 hue & apply linex in the bed. Ready for work all day long out at the ranch then & would out last & out work any modern truck, all while looking a whole lot sexier.
Great looking truck, fix the rust and it’s got another 50 years of work in it. Those FE based 360s will run forever if you can afford the gas and the lack of A/C, power steering, etc. mean even less to go wrong! A beauty in disguise.
Yes I have a 79 f350 4+4 purchased 1982 that I drive every day. My daughter has a 77 f 250 she drives some.
“Big Sky” country.
