1974 MGB GT: Almost Bought It!

1974 MGB GT

We like MGB-GTs here at Barn Finds, as evidenced by Jesse’s recent purchase and Josh’s longing. So, when I found this solid, chrome-bumpered, straight car yesterday, I didn’t write about it right away because I was having some serious discussions with my better half about purchasing it. Smarter heads prevailed (we currently have a double-digit vehicle count between the two of us and are losing some storage) so I’m passing this one on to you. My garage will miss it! Offered here on craigslist in Burlington, North Carolina for $1,300! The car is more solid than it first appears…

Doglegs

I corresponded a little with the seller, who very quickly sent me some close-ups of the all-important doglegs, the first place to rust on an MGB. As you can see, while they aren’t perfect, they aren’t bad either, and would certainly be repairable for a driver. I can deal with the early ’74-only overriders, and while the head is off the engine and it’s locked up, I already had a running MGB engine in my garage! Believe me, if we weren’t in-between permanent housing I’d find a way, but storage for yet another non-running vehicle is just an impossibility right now. I did go through the exercise on what a finished project would be worth, and it would be hard to be upside down on this one unless you wanted a concours show-winner. So—besides telling me I should have found the room for the car, why don’t one of you readers buy this car and at least I can be happy it’s saved—at least that’s what I’m telling myself!

Yep, Jamie is the one who wanted it badly.

Oh, I did. Debated with myself for a long time, too.

Thank goodness the cars on here always are on one coast or the other. Whether West, East or South, it’s too far for me, here in MN, to run off and pick up. My wife says to thank you for your thoughtfulness!

It wasn’t intentional Mark. Guess we need to try harder!

I would be tempted too if it were near me. I actually prefer those over riders on that car. They really protect the hood and grille. I had them on my old GT and with parking in New Orleans, really helped.

I’m glad it’s not in my neighborhood as I have no space myself.

I’m happy to see all the interest in the old B’s. I’ve been buying, rebuilding and selling (had one on here last year) them since the early 90’s, and the interest can only help the hobby. I’m down to two now, a roadster (67) and a GT (74.5) and just can’t justify parking more dead cars in my driveway. But this is the kind of car I look for in a project. Good one!
    Have fun

if there were more photos with the CL add it would help a lot. still $1300 does not buy much these days so it does seem like a good deal. nice find.
