This 1974 MGB is one of those projects that looks daunting at first glance, but then you find out that someone has done a lot of the work already. It’s listed for sale here on eBay and can be picked up in Eatontown, New Jersey. No one has even bid the starting price of $2,000 yet, which surprises me.
The car looks relatively solid at first glance with some surface rust in typical MGB spots such as under where the waistline trim used to be. Some bodywork has been done already on the lower front fenders and in the rear of the rockers, the first place most MGBs rust. What I’d like to know is was the rust confined to the outer layer, or did the castle rail and middle rocker panel rust as well — and what reparations were made if they did.
Here’s a close up (unfortunately fuzzy) of that area. The final bodywork has not been done yet. I’ve done this on an MGB (all three layers) and I’m not doing that again. It was my first attempt at welding anything and still gives me nightmares.
The “roll bar” probably wouldn’t stay if it were my car — if it’s like the ones I’ve seen before it’s only attached to the sheet metal shelf behind the seats.
Another fuzzy picture, but at least it looks like the car has one good seat.
There are certainly some new parts shown here (this is the front suspension if you are wondering) but I’m not sure all bushings were replaced. In this case, I would assume you are going back in here. So why does this seem like a good buy to me? Read on, MGDuff!
We’re told the engine has already been gone through, and the purple silicone fluid in what looks like a new master cylinder reservoir hints that the brakes have received some work as well. I’m not a huge fan of the downdraft Weber in this application but hey, it’s new and it will work well enough until you can pick up a pair of SUs. Additionally, we’re told the car has an overdrive transmission, which would cost around $1,000 or more on its own. The best part of all is that you have time before Spring to get the car back on the road! Anyone up for a Winter project?
Sadly I hate to say it but at the local recycling center which buys cars too recently got three MG’s One a rare MGB GT with wires. All are complete and not weathered. Way nicer then this and these were sent to the scrap yard!
That may be a good price in Jersey for a project B. But these types of half-finished restorations are a dime a dozen down South and sometimes in the hundreds of dollars. Guy is dreaming to get $2k, that engine bay is NOT done to a show standard. And unless that includes a shed full of NOS British Leyland parts, I don’t see $2000 worth of MG here. Seller does not mention if all the spare parts he has are new or just discards from another car. Overdrive is cool…but not worth the price of admission on this subject vehicle…
