1978 Triumph Spitfire 1500: Red, White Or Blue

red white or blue!

The shop selling this Spitfire is busy finding, restoring and flipping British beauties. The blue B looks like the best prospect to me, but they are all nice. The Spitfire is listed on here on craigslist for $5700. It’s far from the most desirable but if it’s as well sorted as they say, it could be inexpensive for a driver and they are willing to take your interesting project in trade. This Spit was supposedly stored for 19 years and has been mechanically restored. It also has a new top and interior as well. So does $5700 seem reasonable for a sorted Spitfire? Special thanks to Robert R for this find!

The red and blue cars look like MG’s

They are MGs Ken. The red is a rubber bumper MGB and the blue is an earlier steel bumper MGB. I’m not sure if they are for sale too, but I would assume so. Personally, I’m really liking the blue car!

red one is a midget, not a ” b”. and a 1978 spit didn’t have points (which they said they replaced). these are my “lbc’s”.(little british cars)

2 Bees and a Spity I like them all LOL. Had a a Midget with a bad relay had to jump it with a screwdriver to get going after that stopped working I had to skateboard it! These Brit sports cars were fun and easy to work on have to say the one I liked best was a Sunbeam Alpine.

the red mgb sure sits a lot higher then the earlier model blue mgb. any or all three of them would be fun. great finds.

The British Leyland way of meeting US bumper height standards. Seriously. You can get parts to fairly easily lower rubber bumper cars back to chrome bumper heights, and even replace the rubber bumpers with chrome bumpers if you want to.

tho not a British car fan I always liked the Spitfire looks (and the name taken from an awesome aircraft) this one seems like it would be a great driver. I am surprised no one has chimed in with value comments.

Yeah, this one obviously has had a quite a bit of work done on it but it doesn’t appear to have been by a specialist Spitfire shop. A lot of small details not correct or original. Why randomly paint so many parts red ? The ad lists the shift knob as one of the parts new or restored but in the photo you can see the knob clearly is neither new nor refurbished (and carries a “TR” logo which has nothing to do with the Spitfires, OK, that’s being picky)

Ad claims “completely restored from bumper to bumper, including engine, transmission” but no mention of any internal engine work only ancillaries, and no mention of any transmission work other than clutch? My understanding of the term “completely restored from bumper to bumper” would include everything being at least stripped and checked?

As others have said, 1978-onwards aren’t the most desirable Spitfire years. It doesn’t have the overdrive (I know, most US Spits don’t – but it’s a real nice thing to have). I think you’d have to check a car like this out in person, very carefully. If the body is really sound then this could be a good starting point.

    I’d say maybe a little overpriced at $5,700 ?

He has the B’s listed also, just click the “more ad’s by seller” button.
Many smiles per mile on any of these, if they are sorted already @ these prices!
