4WD Fun: 1979 Dodge Power Wagon

This 1979 Dodge Power Wagon has not been tucked away in a garage its whole life. It has been used for its intended purpose. Located in Redmond, Oregon, this W150 short wheelbase step side Dodge truck is listed here on eBay. The reserve has not been met but it is currently bid to $9,100. There are three days remaining in the auction. The odometer on the truck shows 70,437 miles. The exterior color is silver with a black interior. With the sun faded patina, the truck first appears to be in primer because the silver has lost some of its shine.

The truck is powered by a 5.9 liter (360 cubic inch V8) engine. The seller states that they have replaced the original carburetors with an Edelbrock 650 AVS2 carburetor. Other upgrades and maintenance replacement include ceramic coated headers, starter, fuel pump, heater motor, clutch wiper motor, wiper arm bushings, and battery. The seller has also replaced the shocks and tires recently. The truck is equipped with power steering and power brakes. The seller states that the truck runs well and drives nice.

There are not enough pictures of the interior to truly see its condition but the seller states that the bench seat has been recovered and the partial picture of the seat looks good. New carpet and a new headliner were also installed. The truck has an oak bed that looks freshly installed. Apparently there is a problem with the gauges and the seller states that they are not accurate. The truck is also missing a radio. New seat belts have been installed and the seller offers to send a video for interested buyers.

The seller originally purchased the truck from central California and he is the third owner. The truck is presented in the listing as a reliable  driver with a good engine and drivetrain. The truck is operated via a manual transmission. It would be helpful if there was more information about the 4WD unit and its condition. I believe this year truck has full time 4WD with a 2 speed transfer case. The truck is said to be rust free except for the obvious surface rust. It looks like a great truck if you can get it for less than $12,500.

Few things in life are more satisfying than tooling down a gravel road in a truck like this.

That would be a 1980 if the grille is correct…..

There were 3 trim levels of the sweptline, mopar for fleetside,or utiline, mopar for stepside. They were a custom, adventurer and adventurer SE. The latter came standard with the rectangular stacked headlamps. Custom came standard with the round single lamps. I had a 79,318 2bbl utiline adventurer SE,ensign blue, chrome 5 slot wheels like the Red Express. Sold it when it had 280,000miles.

Brian, I believe geo is referring to the blackout on the grille which was a 1980 thing. As for the stacked vs single headlights I have three adventurers two have single round headlights while the third has stacked rectangle headlights, I also have a 79 Custom with with the stacked lights and my dad purchased a new 79 W150 Custom and it had stacked rectangle lights. I don’t know for sure what dictated which headlights they came with in 79/80 as I’ve seen both in all trim levels but cant say for sure on the Adventurer SE.

Someone did a manual hub conversion at some point. I’m in the process of putting a 79 W150 utiline/stepside back on the road and probably gonna use 80s axles since the conversion kits for the full time axles are pretty scarce nowadays.

Good call Mike on the manual hub switch. I recall Mile-Marker was a popular go to option back in the day..not sure if they’re around still.. Lovely truck 4spd and 4wd 😎
