1980 Ford Fairmont: Drag Potential?

fordfairmon

I have to applaud this seller for finding some potential inspiration for investing in this low-mileage 1980 Ford Fairmont. If you check out the listing here on eBay for this dry 32,000 mile survivor, you’ll see a picture of a Fairmont setup for drag racing, and I have to say, it looks imposing with fat slicks and a low stance. Despite its lack of exotic qualities or anything resembling an engaging driving experience, this Fairmont has found some friends with money to burn, as bidding is active but the reserve (somewhere just south of $2K, I’d assume) remains unmet. Truth be told, pro-stock legend Bob Glidden did some serious damage with his Fairmont, setting numerous records in his time. Since I wouldn’t want this Fairmont as a daily driver, a drag car build may be its best use. How would you use it? Thanks to Barn Finds reader Jim S. for the find.

My dad had one of these in the mid 80’s as a second car for my mom, it was maroon with red interior and a 6 banger / automatic. I drove my mom somewhere she didn’t want to drive herself and after that trip I told her the car was cheap on gas and handled well but otherwise I would trade it for a Fox body Mustang, she didn’t take my advice.

Animal Jim out of central IL had (and still has) one of the first pro-mods based on this body style.

Jesusssss – what a creature! – saying that an ole boy here has a 78 Mercury Z that’s mint with a trunk full of NOS parts that wants either super money (8 large!) or won’t sell at all – shouldn’t look – we’re all getting old I s’pose

I am redoing an 82 right now for my engine builder. I actually like these. Easy cars to mod considering they are based on fox bodies. Lot of aftermarket support for stock and modified. Could make a sweet sleeper with a 5.0ho 5speed swap and upgrade to 5 lugs.
