Barn Finds reader Rocco B. was kind enough to send us a link to this terrific looking 1984 Hurst Oldsmobile. As with the recent post on the 1979 version, this was based on the Oldsmobile Cutlass, but had some features unique to the Hurst version. This slightly modified car is listed for sale here on craigslist and can be picked up in Fontana, California. The price, you ask? The seller is looking for $7,500 or best offer.
We’re told in the ad that the car has a documented 57,777 miles, has no rust and has never been in an accident. I’d be a lot smarter if I purchased more cars that were like that than the usual basket cases I end up dreaming into my garage. I wish there were more pictures of the outside of the car, but that first one is really nice. This car really shines on the inside, though, with the “Lightning Rod” shifter mechanism and this attractive red interior.
The seller obviously knows what is unique about these cars, highlighting the shifter in the interior pictures. In case you are wondering, here’s a video on how it operates that we’ve linked to before. They have, however, deviated slightly from stock by replacing the springs and shocks with what looks like a slightly lowered setup (attractive in my book) and new Flowmaster mufflers. I’ll bet it sounds pretty good, even if we are talking somewhat emissions strangled 307 V8.
Here’s a close up of the shifter. By the way, these shifters and parts for them get listed for what seem like ridiculous amounts of money on eBay.
Pleasingly stock under the hood, I’ll bet the 307 does just fine moving this car down the road. 3,500 folks thought so in 1984 (that’s how many were sold), which makes me wonder how many are left now. It sure would be nice to own a classic that doesn’t need anything, and even has air conditioning and other conveniences. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I don’t think so. Would you like this special Oldsmobile in your driveway?
If this car is really as nice as it appears to be, it’s a great deal in west central Ohio.
This deal is a scam. I hate to admit it but I bought this car and it’s a scam. Sellers name is Clayton Rupert from Fontana Ca. If you know where he is please let me know

JA, can you tell us more? Do you have the car?
I do not have the car. I bought it the day after Memorial Day and sent a truck for it. The Truck arrived last Saturday and no one knows the seller or the car. The phone is now disconnected and the seller has stopped
Communication. I went to the local FBI and they agreed it was a criminal act but wouldn’t take the case because they don’t have the time
Had an ’85 442 which was mechanically the same car but without the Lightning Rods. It had the same VIN code “9” 307 CID V8 that made 180 hp, 200R4 4-speed automatic trans, and wonderful 3.73 gears. They were quick for the “Dark Ages” of the late ’70s and early ’80s, (mine would go 16.2s in the quarter mile all day long). Great cars . . .
is there a 3rd pedal? i didn’t think so. then no i’m not interested in this 442
I’d park my bravada until winter. Prefer T-tops myself.
Never cared for this GM series’ dashboards. Looks like a couple of flat boxes stuck to a wall. The car itself though looks like a very nice survivor, even if a modern Camry V6 will blow its doors off. (And it will – Car & Driver got a 2012 down the quarter mile in 14.3 seconds, 0-60 in 5.8) But there’s more to a vehicle than specs, which is why I’m happy with a Sportster instead of a V-Max.
@ RS: Yeah, but the Camry will NEVER look near as COOL doing it!! :-)
A cool car looks better going slow then a boring car looks going fast
Good looking cars, IMO. The 307 is not quick but still fun. My friend had an 86 Monte SS which is essentially the same car.
I prefer the dark blue examples but this one is very sharp, especially with the slight lowering job.
Unless there is some not told problems I think it is a good buy. Use it in the summer and just enjoy it
This is a good price. I sold my 84 H/O about 2 years ago in the same shape for $8500. Everyone is right on the performance, it is disappointing to be sure, but again considering the era it was manufactured in, that’s not surprising. The lightening rod shifters are fun…for awhile….but after a few months you just sorta let them sit.
Had an 85 Gutless Cutlass with the 231 for my first car. This would be an upgrade!
Great cars, just got my license when they were new,a friend had a brand new one, always wanted one growing up, got one a few years ago enjoyed it wife hated it lol looking for another one, this one looks good enough for me
June 5 and still shows to be available….hmmmm
