Two-Owner Survivor: 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24

Summer might be drawing to an end, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of opportunities to hit the road behind the wheel of a classic Convertible. If affordability forms part of the equation, this 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 might be worth a close look. It is a two-owner survivor that presents well and is a turnkey proposition for its next owner. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Mitchell G. for spotting the Cavalier listed here on Craigslist in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. You could drive it home after handing the seller $6,500.

Chevrolet released its Second Generation Cavalier range for the 1988 model year. It proved a showroom success, with 322,939 buyers handing over the cash to take one home in 1988. That figure fell well short of the previous generation’s sales record of 462,611, but the numbers would climb marginally in 1989 before tapering off during this generation’s remaining production years. This first-year example is a Z24 Convertible that presents nicely in Bright Red. The paint exhibits some of the swirling that can develop following years of washing, but I suspect that careful work with a high-quality polish would improve the situation. Otherwise, it remains presentable and is said to be rust-free. The Black soft-top is only two years old, fitting tightly with no evidence that it might leak. The trim and glass are in good condition, as are the alloy wheels.

The Convertible variant of the 1988 Cavalier was only available in Z24 specs, meaning that buyers received a 2.8-liter V6 producing 125hp and 160 ft/lbs of torque. A five-speed manual transmission was standard equipment, although this car features the optional three-speed automatic, which will hinder performance potential. However, when combined with the power-assisted steering and brakes, this Z24 would be a perfect boulevard cruiser. The listing indicates that the tires are fairly new, as are the alternator and hoses, and that the Cavalier may have received some recent work to its fuel-injection system. The result is that it runs and drives well, with no apparent mechanical needs or shortcomings.

Examining the seller’s interior shots brings more good news for potential buyers. Cloth trim from the 1980s has a reputation for deteriorating and failing, but this Cavalier’s Gray seatcovers have avoided that fate. The dash is impressive, the carpet is surprisingly free from major marks, and there is no crumbling plastic. The digital gauge cluster appears to function correctly, and the vehicle features a modern Pioneer stereo. This Cavalier also cements its luxury credentials courtesy of the air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, and leather-wrapped wheel.

This 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 Convertible is undeniably tidy, carrying the hallmarks of a vehicle that has been treated respectfully by its two owners. However, many readers might question whether the seller’s price is justified. If you believe NADA, it is well above the potential value quoted by them. However, if you tour the classic market for equivalent vehicles currently available and for recent successful sales, the price appears to be realistic. This Z24 won’t appeal to everyone, but do you find it attractive enough to pursue further?

My Dad had a hard top version of this car. That engine/transmission combination really moves these cars down the road. Fun to drive.

This is very nice. I always liked the late 80’s Z24. They were quick just like Bobhess said above. The silver trim and rims are amongst my favorites on these.

I’d definitely want to see the undercarriage of a PA car but given the interior condition and the fact it’s a ragtop it might well have been a summer-only car from new.

I was visiting a friend who had a white ’88 Z24 coupe. His renter liked it so much he bought a new black Z24 coupe. I made the mistake of riding in the black one on an elevated LA freeway ramp. Luckily I’m still here to report it had great road holding ability in the curves.

The difference between the automatic and the 5-speed is phenomenal. I had an 84 wagon, 2.0 & 5-gear. 34mpg, pulled a 2500 lb boat, topped out at 135 mph (thanks, Missouri Highway Patrol!) Later had a ’91 Sunbird convertible, loved it too even though the automatic was not much to write home about. With the V6 ahead or to the right of the automatic, it may offset the loss. Will be a nice ride for someone. I would like to see under it to verify an absence of corrosion, thouigh.
