High-Mile Rarity: 1989 Ford Mustang ASC McLaren

The ASC McLaren-converted Fox body Ford Mustang pops up quite a bit for such a limited production car. I’d be willing to bet the ASC McLaren Mustang has one of the highest survival rates of a limited production vehicle, as it seems like close to all 247 of them are still on the road. The seller of this example is the original owner, and his is one of the rarely seen examples that isn’t white or black. The silver paint scheme apparently makes it one of just six cars painted this way, and I believe it considering out of all the ones we’ve written up over the years, I’ve never seen a silver car come up for grabs. Find this ASC McLaren Mustang here on eBay where bidding is at $6,600 with the reserve unmet.

The McLaren conversions are a curious thing, never reaching the status of being a truly collectible car despite its pedigree as a truly limited edition vehicle. Perhaps it was the arrival of the factory-built Mustang convertible that curtailed excitement for this aftermarket build, or the slightly awkward looks. Whichever it was, these short-lived conversions have always been on the borders of the collector car market, watching the Saleens of the same era with envy as those cars continue to appreciate nicely. The seller points out this car cost around $28,000 when new, but it clearly hasn’t appreciated much since then. The bodywork and the special smoked taillights do look quite nice, especially for a car with 177,000 miles.

The interior is in good condition, with the silver leather / cloth upholstery presenting well for a car with a roof that goes away. Factor in that with the higher mileage and it becomes clear this long-term owner has cherished their rare Mustang. The automatic is a buzzkill, but a lot of these ASC cars were slapped with the slushbox, which only added to the price tag while decreasing the enjoyment of driving one. They all came with the venerable 5.0L V8 which is a good match for the automatic or the manual, but I’d always opt for the 5-speed if I had to own one of these cars. Now, what is interesting about this ASC is that it’s a 1989 and it comes with a few different features from the previous years, with the most noticeable being the Enkei-made “blade”-style wheels, along with the ASC McLaren logo stamped into the rear bumper, as seen in the photo above.

The engine bay isn’t overly detailed, but it looks about right for the miles. The seller reports he took a proactive approach to maintenance, changing the oil proactively and also recently tackling several large maintenance projects. Some of work included a new radiator, battery, catalytic convertor, starter, and more. The fluids have all been recently changed, and the seller reports that a new top was fitted in 2017. The top motor was replaced at the same time, and numerous other small fixes are detailed in the listing. While the seller is certainly aware of the rarity of his car, that doesn’t always translate to getting the price you want – but he’s certainly the right kind of guy to buy from in terms of how much he appears to love this unusual Fox body.

File the ASC-McLaren conversion under “lipstick on a pig”. These were some of the ugliest Mustangs built.

There is one down the street from me just sitting out in the Nevada sun. I can never find anyone home. And notes left have never been answered.
