2-For-1: 1968 Mercury Cyclones Package

When it comes to project cars, I’m not sure if there’s anything much better than a 2-for-1 offer. That’s what you get with this pair of Mercury Cyclones. Listed for sale here on Craigslist, they are located in Gregory, Michigan. They are offered with a clean title, and the seller has set an asking price of $3,500 for the pair, although he may consider a trade of a zero-turn or a tractor with a snow plow.

The white car in this pair has been designated as the parts car, while the one in primer is the project vehicle. The project car needs some work, and there are some rust issues which will need to be addressed. As well as any rust that is visible externally, there is rust present in the floors and trunk. However, the seller is including a nice fresh set of floor pans and a new gas tank in the deal. The white car looks to have lots of nice parts just waiting to find their way onto the project car, including a full set of glass that looks to be in good condition.

As far as an interior is concerned, you may be starting virtually from scratch with this project. There is a new headliner included in the deal, but neither car has seats. As far as the rest of the trim is concerned, we don’t get any real information on that.

Originally the white car housed a 302ci engine, but both it and the transmission are gone. The project car was originally a 390 2V with a 3-speed manual transmission. That combination is also gone. The good news is that they do come with a 390 4V GT engine, but we don’t have any information about its condition. Still, it is a starting point, and when installed it should make this Cyclone a rather nice performer.

This pair of cars is an interesting proposition. I am not deriding Mustang owners or those that have restored them (I honestly love Mustangs and really want to own a ’66), but a Mercury Cyclone represents something that is just that little bit different. I can see a lot of potential locked away in this pair that is just waiting to be released. So which would you prefer, a Mustang or a Cyclone?

Much rather have the Cyclone over the Mustang. Don’t get me wrong, my first car was a 67 Mustang convertible, and first new car was a 87 Mustang GT. But Mustangs are a dime a dozen and the Cyclone.is a car you won’t see everyday. Don’t be a lemming in a shiny metal box. Dare to be different.

Lemming? Really, vance… That’s what you think of people who own Mustangs, huh? Having an open mind, I’d be equally happy with a nice Cyclone OR a Mustang, or hell…even a Rambler or AMC…although the Mustang is my first love. I still remember the dark blue ‘67 coupe one of my Beaver and Cub leaders owned…it was probably Acapulco Blue, although it’s been nearly 40 years since I last saw it. Honestly couldn’t tell you the first Cyclone I saw, but her coupe is the first one I can remember clearly. Getting older, several high school friends were all about the Camaro…or corvettes…or firebirds. I became a Mustang nut just to BE DIFFERENT. Lemming. Huh…

Yeah, well, I’d like to win the lottery so I can buy a candy apple red 1969 Boss 429. I’d be the only person in a city of 80,000 people to own one. Is that different enough for you? It would be for me.

I always liked that talladega front end of these body styles. Slightly different and better looking .

I had a 1970 Cyclone GT 25000 miles gave $2700 for it in 1971. Had it one year and a drunk thought he was in the right when he hit three parked cars stopped with his front end buried in the front of my Cyclone which was pushed back into another car. Top end was 145 I was told but got it up to 130 and still had paddle left. Burn tires first three gears and by the time it got there you did not have time to look for any smoke.

Haven’t seen a Mercury Cyclone in person in a loonngg time, let alone days. Way more rare than the Fairlanes/Torino’s, of course I’m talking big inch performance versions here.
I’d rather have the Cyclone over a Mustang, both are cool and all that but I’ve owned several ‘Stangs in the past. Come to think of it I did own an early seventies Cyclone GT for a very short while, was not road worthy and I wound up selling it to a buddy at work. Actually from what I remember it was a fairly sporty looking car inside and out.

Why all the comparisons between this and the Mustangs? This was a Torino cousin, not directly related to nor in competition with the Mustang. I love both the Torino and Cyclone GT from these years, and both are more rare than the Mustang.

That was the question asked by Adam, would you rather have a mustang or one of these rare machines, that’s where all this is coming from really.

Exactly, I answered Adam’s question, I have owned 2 Mustangs and loved them both. Cyclones are rare and to have one would be awesome. Mustangs have been a great attribute to Ford and automotive history. Jett and Ken either didn’t read the article provided or don’t retain information very well. Maybe it was the reference to lemmings that set them off. You can blame The Police, they wrote the lyrics, I thought it was fitting.

I was at The Pahrump, Nevada Annual car show today. There was a Light yellow 1965 Mercury Cyclone with Factory 427 with 4 speed. Paint looked Original, nice car. I had a 1966 Ford Fairlane GTA last 2 years of High School.
