22k Mile Survivor? 1963 Chevrolet Impala SS

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet created the Super Sport package for the full-size Impala in 1961, but only sold 453 copies the first year. Beginning in 1962, they de-emphasized performance over style (that included bucket seats) and demand went through the roof. 99,311 copies of the SS were produced in 1962 followed by another 153,271 units in 1963. At that time, there was no better way to See the USA in Your Chevrolet than in an Impala SS. The seller’s Ermine White beauty, powered by a 327 cubic inch V8, is said to have just 22,000 miles and may be an unmolested survivor. Located in The Woodlands, Texas, this Impala is available here on craigslist for $79,000 miles.

The 1963 edition of the full-size Chevies was the mid-point for that generation (1961-65). And it may have been the most stylish of the five years, but that’s just my personal opinion. They were an extension of the ‘62s and would be sleeker and less bulky looking than the cars Chevrolet rolled out for 1964 (which sold in smaller numbers than the ‘63s). When you ordered a 1963 Impala SS, you got seating for five, a console, SS badging, and Super Sport wheel covers, along with a few other amenities.

This SS looks really sharp, but there are a few little nicks and scratches when you look very closely. We assume the paint and interior are original as the seller makes no claim otherwise. We’re told there’s a 327 V8 under the hood rated at 325 hp with a 4-barrel carburetor. But no photos are provided and the hp rating should have been more like 300. Since an automatic transmission is involved, it must be the venerable 2-speed Powerglide. Besides power steering and brakes, this Chevy also has factory air conditioning which cost $364 extra with a deluxe heater.

Some of our readers may say the odometer reading is really 122,622 miles and the car has been restored. Whether or not that’s the case, the seller says the Impala has been subjected to no accidents, has no rust, and therefore contains no body filler. It’s presented as a classic automobile that you could hop into and drive almost anywhere at almost anytime. Or the seller can help you arrange for shipping services (for which we assume the cost is not included). Kudos to Pat L. for bringing this neat Chevy to light!

Russ, you’re right. I know a 325 horsepower 327 wasn’t available in the ’63 Impala; it was a 250 hp or 300 hp. The 300 horse version was all about better ‘flow’… more flow for the carb, intake, heads, and even exhaust. Both are great engines.
    A/C a big plus, too.

Well, hate to be a Spoil Sport but this SS has flipped the od at least once. Unless Granny was a two foot driver and made 22,000 trips to the corner grocery store ,that power brake pedal is worn out so bad that it’s almost down to the metal! That and the lack of the most likely greasy engine compartment should make buyer beware. It is a nice looking car and if all panels carry the original paint then it’s a beautiful survivor worth about half of what seller is asking. At almost 80k there should be engine, trunk and underside photos as well as lots of documentation but in Texas you get mileage unk. As not a very tight mileage or title state.

mike I agree with you completely.for almost 80000 one would put some more pics of the motor and trunk are and not just the body and interior.I would be very wary to buy without taking a look in person.

this looks like the base 250hp 327 as the 300hp and up had a factory tach build into the dash in front of speedometer only 250 base 327 came with no tach in 1963

So sweet! I had the base ’63 Impala back in the 60s, and my car was stolen almost on a daily basis. It would have been really hard to keep this car pinned down anywhere it was parked!!

“We assume the paint and interior are original as the seller makes no claim otherwise.”

I’d say the opposite – that since the seller makes no claims that the paint and interior are original, which would be a strong selling point, we can assume they are not. Very nice car, either way.

Is it me, the camera angles, or is that car lowered? Apart from that, it’s in very nice shape, and could be an original car, but there’s no engine pictures, and it would have to be gone over very, very carefully, especially at that price. A 327 with factory A/C is a nice find, and it would be fun to own.

63 SSs did sit lower since the SS came with different coil springs than a regular Impala to give them a slightly lowered appearance. To my knowledge that is the only year they did that.

Lancaster, Texas is a suburb of Dallas and Bruton Chevrolet was located there. The University of Texas decal in the rear window is period correct from the 1960’s as I was there then. I love the car and its equipment, 327, auto, A/C, but the price is way too high without documentation, et al. Also, The Woodlands is an expensive suburb of north of Houston. I lived there from 2004 to 2008. Why advertise it on Craig’s List, not eBay, and why are there no photos of the engine compartment, trunk or underneath the car? Lack of transparency.

Seriously doubt this only has 22000 mi. Paint is wore off of steering wheel, brake pad worn through and carpet near gas pedal worn. I’ve never seen this on cars that actually have only 22,000 original miles. The car may be original but with more than 22000 miles.

Here l go again but I can’t help myself. The asking price is nuts. At least I would never cough up 86k. It is a nice car but in my opinion it would have to be a100 point vehicle to justify what this seller is looking for. I’m seeing a lot of this crazy money lately on BF. I wonder if and when the bottom falls out of this delusional market. Rant finished.

I’d add 100k to that odometer number.

Someone pointed out the brake pedal rubber and steering wheel both showing way more use than 22k.

I’ll add the stretched and sagged driver’s seat upholstery.

Did I miss the pics under the hood?? (If I did, blame the internet here where I live. Comcast/XFinity is the worst!!!)

Agreed the price is a bit high currently

What was once a hobby is now a global enterprise. The average Joe is priced out of the market. Most autos and trucks now require a hefty withdraw from your 401K. Everyone is looking to cash in on what ever they can bring to market also with a ton of BS.
