28k Original Miles: 1976 Chevrolet Camaro

There are some cars that just bring back memories. This 1976 Chevrolet Camaro is in excellent condition and, while not a barn burner, is a clean example of a basic Camaro from the mid 1970’s. It is hard to believe that it has survived all this time. There is only one day remaining in the auction here on eBay. The car is currently bid to $9,702 and is listed at no reserve. So, sometime on Tuesday, it will sell. The car is located in Hamel, Minnesota and is advertised as a low mile car. The ad states that the odometer reading is only 27,730 miles. Only 3,984 of the 182,959 Camaros produced in 1976 were painted Code 49 dark green.

The engine compartment is simple and clean. The Camaro is powered by a 2 barrel LG3 305 cubic inch V8 engine and backed by a 3-speed manual transmission. This engine was only rated at 140 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque. The car is advertised as a one-owner car. That owner must have loved this car because it appears well maintained and has no visible signs of rot or rust decay. I remember looking at a dark green Camaro like this around 1980 that was for sale locally. The car had been repainted and had fish eyes in the paint but had the same Rally wheels but I believe it was a 350 cubic inch V8 with an automatic transmission.

The white interior is quite a nice contrast with the black dash and console. The door panels and standard interior look immaculate and only some of the plastic trim pieces show any yellowing. The shifter and steering wheel look stock and even the seat belts are held in place with their factory loop straps. This was the second year that Chevrolet did not offer the Z28 option in the second-generation Camaro. With the popularity of the Pontiac Trans Am, Chevrolet decided it would be best to bring back the Z28 option in 1977 even though it was mostly a sticker package and didn’t offer a true performance engine like the Pontiac W72 400 cubic inch V8 engine in 1977.

This car has a tow hitch and what looks like an antenna bracket on the rear bumper. I always liked the Camaro rear tail lights on these cars. I think the body style looks good even without a rear spoiler. I wish there was more information on this car in the ad or at least the story behind its survival, but I guess the new owner will find out when he or she goes to pick it up. I hope it finds a new home and is driven and enjoyed. We appreciate “Local Sheriff” for bringing this one to our attention.

No spoiler, tinted glass, tilt, or factory gauges – just white letter tires and an am/fm with rear speaker. Even so, I kind of like it…

Price is rising, pretty basic and no A/C but solid looking car. Sure someone up in the northern part of the country will enjoy it.

Cool car, I like the unpretentious color and basic specs, it serves this generation of malaise Camaro well because they were hardly muscle cars in substance anyway. Looks like a jaunty ride for a be-turtlenecked older gentleman who styled himself after Paul Newman back in the day

    Link to auction, please?

I love that color combo. 3 speed manual on a 305 – basic, yes, but would still be fun.

I like the simplicity of this car. Kind of like a classic for minimalists. I prefer the looks of these mid gen 2 Camaros to the latter ones, with all the stickers and the busier tail lights.

This reminds me of the 1980 Camaro that a co-worker bought new.

3 speed manual, small V8, no options, not even power brakes. Sorry, it did have the rally wheels – those are a necessity!

I had a 77, black, red interior, same 305, but automatic. This one is nice.

What a great car, this is how I would have bought one in the day if I had been able to have a 2 door. Love the color, both inside and out. The new owner is going to really enjoy this.

Nobody mentioned the best option of all… the trailer hitch. In Minnesota, you’ve got to get that aluminum Lund boat down to the lake for some walleye fishing on the weekends.

It’s rare to find a V-8 engine with the 3 speed manual transmission that have survived this long. They were entry level cars and got used up pretty fast. This would get a bunch of second looks at a car show.

Still not a fan of cameros but i do like reading the stories on them here. They do look better with the rear spoiler tho.

If I were to have a Camaro of this era it would be one like this. No spoilers, garish tape strips, or other decals that look like a 12 year old got a sticker book for Christmas.
It would be easy to swap in a 5-speed and get some more beans out of the motor while still looking stock. I even like the color combo.
Cars devoid of tack-on gimmicks look so clean, you can really appreciate the shape.

It reads in the add that it is a one owner. Just wondering if the one owner is the owner the seller bought it from, or is it THE original owner?

Alas, the original owner is long gone from this transaction. The seller is has other sporty cars on EBay, so must specialize in that.

Am I wrong , my 77 RS I ordered in 76 came with a blue engine. It was a 350 4 speed car, and now only has 40 thousand miles on it .Think they started painting the engines blue in 75.

I am thinking the same. I was with my mother at the dealer when she traded our 72 Nova in and bought what would come to be my first car. I drove that car for 5 years and I KNOW my motor was not orange it was blue and also the 305. I thought “that looks a lot different than mine did” as soon as I saw that picture of the engine bay. It would make me question a lot more about this one…

It would be interesting to learn whether GM put any specific date for when to introduce the blue color and whether it was actually followed through – in a transitional period I’d believe they’d use up any supplies before painting in the new hue. And when people are saying ’77; does that mean MODEL YEAR or actual year? The ’76 Camaro model in question would have been in production for 5 months before entering 1976

My very first car was a 76 Camaro Type LT, 350/four speed. Don’t remember the color of the engine. I think I paid $5,200 for it, drove it for 9 years and 140,000 miles, and then sold it for $1,200. It was still running strong. So $4,000 for all those years and miles. Not bad.

I am really liking the dark green exterior with the white interior!
Not a common color combination on these at all – it looks great.
I didn’t remember them offering a white interior on the Camaro.
Nice to see one so well preserved.

My first car was one my mother bought new and was the dark blue with white interior. It was an automatic, no spoiler, but it did have ac, kind of important in Georgia!

Really nice looking car ; usually these ended up getting trashed when they became a $ 1,500 car for 18 year old boys. My only issue with the car is the rear glass, I like the looks of the flat rear glass better

Why do we say. “ I had one just like it , but mine was red. Mine didn’t have the white seats though. Oh it had after market wheels. And mine had factory a/c. And mine was nicer and. Blah blah blah.

Some people want to comment on a car that catches their interest and share what they had. Plus by leaving a comment they can receive and read comments from others. No big deal.

After ’71, i think the bean counters at Chev & Pont changed the f-body lower door panels purposely to make it very difficult to close the doors with the STD interior with no pull straps, grabbing onto a shallow wide door “coin tray” – so that 1 would have to spring for the delux interior to get the pull straps. Most people grabbed the top of the door to close it – with the windows down. Power locks, heavy power window motors & side guard beams only made matters worse closing a door with window up, especially with car tilted to the side that works against gravity.
This has std non hidden wipers i believe.
I would like to see the underside because of the rusty door latches, control arms & steering shaft that i don’t expect to see on a car in that condition. Is there any way to verify those door panels are original? I saw a ’74 bird with white interior starting to turn yellow – in ’78!!
On the other hand, i think those tires are original from ’76! See any sidewall cracks? My 25 year Outline RWL Cordovans don’t have cracks either. Imagine what a crap modern tire would look like after 45 years, since they are cracking all over after 7 years! lol
Those are 78!!!! series RWL tires! Try finding even blackwalls today with that Cross-Bronx-Xpressway-friendly profile, let alone RWL ones! Not sure why spare is muddy.
Odd the car was ordered with chrome roof drip rails since the car was never intended to be used in the rain.

Oops – the chrome roof drip rail is only on the passenger side of the roof! Factory mistake?

I noticed the roof drip rails too and thought it was an odd option for such a low option car, but didn’t notice the driver’s side.

Could the chrome edging be peeled off of them? It looks like there might still be a rail there.

Yes the engines were blue and mine has both drip rails, drivers side is hard to keep on.
