30 Years Hidden: 1980 Jeep Wagoneer

With this listing, we’re going to have to use our imaginations. The archival footage of what looks like a very nice 1980 Jeep Wagoneer is all we have to go on, despite the seller spending most of the description referring to a vehicle that’s been hidden away in a garage for 30 years. The seller presents two possibilities for the next owner, either to restore the Jeep or “…scrap (it) for a profit.” That’s a pretty big swing on the scale of possibilities, but if it still looks anything like it does in these photos, let’s hope that it’s saved. Find the listing for the Jeep here on craigslist with an asking price of $3,200.

I get that most of you may find this approach to selling a car to be fairly ill-conceived, and I’m inclined to agree with you. How hard would it have been to trundle down to the garage and grab a few pictures, especially compared to finding all of these pictures in old photo albums? I could see the garage being a dimly lit space without much room to move around, and perhaps the seller was worried potential buyers would judge the Jeep on how it presently looks, versus what it was. Either way, it’s definitely the proverbial dangling carrot to go and see if the remains of this pretty Wagoneer resemble anything like what’s in the photos.

The seller notes the Jeep has been parked on jackstands since it went into the garage, and as such, the frame and body are in good shape. Of course, this is impossible to judge without actual photos. The Jeep is located in Niskayuna, New York, which is up near Schenectady County, a place known for harsh winter weather. There’s absolutely no chance it didn’t spend some time in the grit and grime of winter time, but perhaps it was loved enough that it got hosed off after being driven, and/or left the factory with undercoating. The interior, at least when this picture was taken, appears to be in great shape.

Wagoneers of seemingly every era are known for for their high quality materials inside and out, so finding one that isn’t trashed inside is definitely a priority. One would hope with this many years indoors, the interior remains in preserved condition, but that may be wishful thinking. The seller notes that the Jeep hit the skids when he removed the fuel pump for replacement but then never returned to finish the job – so there’s a possibility the only reason the Wagoneer retired from daily use was due to a bad fuel pump. That’s likely no longer the only mechanical fault it has, but perhaps there’s hope this was a solid, running truck before it began its 30 year sleep. If you’re in the area, check it out and report back!

Buy it for 3200.00 then scrap it for 250.00 , sounds right.

The most interesting thing about this Jeep is the seller having pictures of the car taken back in the eighties.

Staying in a garage for 30 years up in New York likely saved this Jeep’s life. Put it back together, get it running and drive it. It might have some rust but it can’t be too bad.

LOL sellers are still finding ways to amaze us. I never thought of that; post old photos from the glory days, not what it actually looks like now.

Clist has gone from crummy useless photos to photos taken back when the car was new. Who needs to see what it looks like now. Look at what it used to like!

Pics looks like they were taken in about 1984-85 (at least- the T&C convert in the back ground is one of those two years), when the current seller or his ancestors bought it used (dealer plates on back?). The big questions are, why was it taken off the road, and what does it look like now??

If I’m buying based upon 1980’s photos, I’ll pay in 1980’s dollars. That’s about a grand per my inflation calculator.

They must have heard you guys. I went to Clist to see the ad, being that the Jeep is an hour from me, and…”This posting has been deleted by its author.”

Wrote the guy 3 days ago. No reply. Somebody almost certainly got a deal. Thing would have to be pretty bad to NOT be worth 3200 obo. Wagoneers are like gold these days.
