$3,000?! For a 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone?! One that looks this nice?!! I must be missing something, I thought these were at least $10,000-$15,000 cars and this one looks like its a paint job away from being a very nice car. The seller has this great catch posted on Craigslist for, yes, $3,000! Too much emphasis on the price? I don’t think so given what these cars routinely sell for. And it’s even better than that, they say or best offer, they just want it gone. Good grief, I know that I’ll regret not buying this one. It isn’t a Cyclone GT, which is the really desirable car, but even a regular non-GT, 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone with a 200 hp 289 V8 engine and 4-speed manual transmission is listed by Hagerty at $7,100 in #4 “fair” condition. Car-flipper alert on this one!
A $3,000 Cyclone with an interior that looks this nice? Hmm.. Well, it looks like the dash may be cracked and the door panel, or at least the metallic part of it, has seen better days. And, did I mention that this one needs a transmission? No? Oops. But, still, this is an absolute killer deal at three grand. The seller isn’t giving up any engine photos or any photos of anything other than these two, but just looking at these two photos, this is a good deal. For anyone willing to do the work him or herself this has the potential to be a very nice project. The seller gives us a hint that the engine runs but no other word at all, you’ll have to get in touch with them. I hope that one of the Barn Finds community snaps this one up. If you’re in New Jersey it’s right there, a half-hour east of Atlantic City. Do you think that you could bring this car back to life? And, how about that price?
Is this what has happened to our hobby? A ’66 Comet Cyclone ( one of my favorite cars) perfectly equipped, fixable, for $3g’s, and a rusty BMW Isetta, incomplete, for $8,500 dollars,,,,,,Coo Coo,,,”Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore”,,,
Easy Howard…..easy. Those with sense know full well that the Comet is a killer deal and the Isetta is waaaayyyy over priced.
Breathe, Breathe…..that’s it….in through the nose and out through the mouth….
Let’s both take our blood pressure medication together….oh wait….lemme deal with these hemorrhoids first….sorry.
You guys related?
Hi lieniedude, if we’re here, we must be related somehow. And besides, DG, it’s the omeprazole I’d have a hard time living without.
Ha-Ha! I guess we are all brothers and sisters here, now that you mention it. Take care, Mike. And yes, I did have to look up omeprazole.
I keep thinking there’s more to this. The Mustang GT wheels look great on this though.
The Mercury came with these wheels on this model…
no it did not came with chrome reverse hub caps
Already removed.
East of Atlantic City is the ocean
Give it time, it will show up at a ” new, improved” price. ( higher! )
Yeah Glen, somebody scored large on this one.
mmmm – not 100% sure but that had all the hallmarks of a scammer ad.
mmmm – not 100% sure but that had all the hallmarks of a scammer ad. Certainly the ad was not informative – no pics of the engine etc. smells fishy.
I agree that this might be some troll on craigslist playing games, maybe not for money but for kicks.
Edit link didn’t show up on my previous post so I’ll add this, if a flipper got it just keep an eye out on ebay as it will be listed soon.
Missed it. Dang
We’ve been getting a lot of scammer posts on our
local craigslist. They list something like a 2012 Chevy 4WD pickup,
fully equipped foe $2250,or some ridiculously low price.
They NEVER show a license plate,& the background
never looks local – palm trees, etc.
Sometimes I think that the people who send a deposit
deserve to lose their money,as they think they’re getting something
for nothing.
Have seen the same thing here — car is always located somewhere else but will be shipped in once the payment is made. Usually owner is in the military and being shipped out and “just needs it sold” — that’s why the pricing is so good. Learned my lesson when I called on a couple different vehicles one week and got texts from the same phone number in return with the exact same story for both vehicles. Gotta be careful out there!
Hi angliagt, shysters in the car biz? No, since when? I know, you’d like to slap the folks that do that, did you learn your lesson? Bet you won’t do that again, and that’s the problem. Good honest ( perhaps gullible) folks, that know nothing about cars, but want something, take a chance. When they get ripped off, it sends a sour message, and they may give up on the hobby altogether. That’s why I want to call these shysters out that want to make a profit off that.
There’s a lot of that in the Minneapolis Craigs list. I can buy a $30,000 tractor right now for $2208. Ya — Right.
This car is for sale by a owner out by me in Tampa FL for $26,000 here is the real sellers ad listed in Daytona http://daytona.craigslist.org/cto/5891385433.html
The ad you showed for $3,000 was a fake.
Thanks Shawn, the “dark” side of BF’s.
The seller’s 1982 Crossfire-Injected Corvette seems steep at $12k, but would likely be the best buy in that lot. $26k for the Cyclone is painful to see, and I suspect that the 1970 Mustang is not, in fact, a Mach I.
So folks, the old saying still applies,,,,”if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”.
It’s because of the comments/questions posted above that I’m very careful buying off eBay and won’t buy off CL. I’m sure I’ve lost out on a few great deals but I’m also sure that I’ve avoided a few scams or very misrepresented items.
or simply buy local and look at it in person
the problem is that there are people in groups that just drive around and pounce on the “steals” to flip, if one is too far away, one of their group isn’t
works well for them
It can happen on both ends on Craigslist, I sold quite a few things on the site with no issues but lately I get buyers asking for my phone number after agreeing on a selling price to contact me then never call after that I start getting soliciting calls even though I’m on the Missouri & Federal NO CALL LIST. Buyers and sellers must beware on the internet no matter what site you use, as far as ebay I have only had one issue that I got burned on selling ( guy said he never got item ) and even though I had substantial proof from UPS that the item was delivered ebay & paypal gave the guy his money back.
Looks the Merc is sold – as no longer available on Craigslist … was a good deal I think.
Happens on both ends. As buyer and seller. Listed my step daughter’s car on CL and kept getting calls about sending the money right away. I had to change the listing to stop that. I also saw a BMW K1200LT on there when I was looking to buy one. Pic in front of a house that wasn’t completed in a neighborhood that wasn’t completed. “garage kept” it said. And the price was half what it was should have been. They want all the contact information they can get to try to steal your stuff.
“was delivered…ebay & paypal gave the guy his money back.”
Hope that wasn’t oudda ur pocket. U had the documentation…
$26,000 – not worth it. May B spend that on the stang 2+2 he also had?
What actually happened according to UPS they tried delivering the item 3 times with no answer at door so they left a note he had to pick it up at the distribution hub because they would not leave it at his door because he lived in a bad neighborhood that packages had been stolen. He refused to go get it then claims he never received it and ebay & paypal went along with it even after I showed them proof of delivery. They gave him his money back so I was out the shipping to him and the shipping to get my item back. So I black listed him from my auctions and left a negative feedback which was a first for me. Live & Learn !!!
If that was ligit, and that’s a big if! Somebody got a great deal, even if there was no engine. The Merc’s don’t bring the same money as the Fairlanes, but unless there’s big trouble not shown in the pictures, this had to be worth $7k. I guess we’ll know if it shows up on eBay next week.
Jeez! Wish I was more into these old cars in high school! Our parking lot was full of $300 muscle cars, all with primer of course. Those were the days..,,
…wish people would read comments before they leave one…
such a good score.
Let’s not forget the scammer that let an old couple on a quest to buy their dream car- A ’66 Mustang…they brought cash, and he murdered them. I hope he gets the death penalty!
bob I remember that one, such a sad story. Selling or buying I usually meet the person in a very public place such as a Walmart / Lowes / Home Depot lot and I bring a friend.
