30K-Mile Survivor: 1977 Chrysler Newport 400 V8

Get ready for another mind-blowing low-mile survivor here on Barn Finds. While this 30,000-mile 1977 Chrysler Newport Two-Door Hardtop isn’t a dusty barn find shown parked under boxes and other junk, with chickens on the hood, it’s incredible. The seller has it listed here on eBay in Oswego, Illinois, and they have a $12,900 buy-it-now price listed, or you can make an offer.

What a car, this thing is beautiful both in condition and style, in my opinion. I see one tiny ding on the left front fender as shown in the photo above, but otherwise, it looks like it’s right off the showroom floor for the most part. The sixth-generation Newport was made from 1973 for the 1974 model year until the end of 1978 and we don’t see too many two-door hardtop body styles.

We saw another crazy nice example a week ago here on Barn Finds, a four-door with a spectacular interior. It had similar low miles but was another three grand or so. While I love that interior and the extra two doors would be handy for hauling family and friends around, a two-door is so rare to see that I’d have to go with this one. The seller mentions around $2,500 in recent maintenance on top of what seems like a reasonable asking price, so you can’t go wrong here.

The blue vinyl seats aren’t even close to being a car show hit as the other one would be with paisley fabric, but this whole interior looks like new from what I can see. The back seat is, of course, perfect, and the seller says there is no rust, even underneath. The brown sedan from a week ago was loaded with power options, which makes the decision tough for me, but I think I’d still go with this light blue two-door. This car is said to have power door locks, for the record.

The engine is Chrysler’s 400-cu.in. OHV V8, which would have had 190 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque when new. Backed by a TorqueFlite automatic, this one has had a ton of recent work, so please click on the eBay link to see what’s been done. It sounds like it’s ready to go on a road trip, to car shows, or just weekend cruises around some nice, paved two-lane back roads. Which one would you rather have, this light blue two-door or the brown four-door?

To answer your question Scotty: Both are excellent examples of the big 70’s Chryslers. But I think I would take this one. The triple blue featuring the baby blue paint, and being a two-door, makes it particularly eye-catching and unique to me. Not cheap, but in the big picture of collector cars, not overly expensive either. I can almost feel it as it floats down the interstate in quiet comfort.

This is a great color combination. Plus the 2 door hardtop was at the end of the line by that time too. I know the term time capsule gets thrown around a lot, but in this case, it fits in my opinion. That 400 will be more than plenty to move that big old Chrysler around too. Nice find and great write up too Scotty. I’d go for this over the 4 door as well.

These are great cars until the Lean Burn system starts acting up.

I was thinking the same thing. Now that it is 48 years old, that lean burn has either been removed, or someone figured out how to make it work.
