30k Miles: One Owner 1972 Buick LeSabre Custom

The Buick LeSabre was a long-term product of that GM division with production from 1959 to 2005. It was a full-size car that was usually the “family sedan” positioned below the luxurious Electra 225. This example from 1972 is said to have had just one owner and the odometer reads 30,000 miles. It could stand a bit of TLC, but we’re told it runs and performs well. From its listing here on craigslist, $8,500 will take it home out of Chicago, Illinois. Thanks for another great tip from Barn Finder Pat L.!

All of General Motors’ full-size cars got redesigned in 1971, and the Buick LeSabre was no exception. But as was often the case in those days, every iteration of a new car seemed to get just a little bigger than its predecessor. Most LeSabres were equipped with a 350 cubic inch V8 motor and that could be the situation with the seller’s car, but he/she doesn’t say or include a photo of the engine bay. By 1972 the engines had been detuned a bit to run on low-lead fuel and – eventually – unleaded gasoline.

There were two versions of the LeSabre in 1972, “regular” and Custom. Buick built 29,500 copies of the former and 35,000 units of the Custom, so they were comparably popular. The seller’s car has a Custom badge on the front fender, signaling it had a better level of trim although the differences weren’t huge. This vehicle has the distinction of low mileage and not changing hands multiple times. The original paint is still in play and looks quite presentable though it shows its age. And the rear bumper is bent and could standing replacing.

Once you open the doors, you’ll see that the front vinyl seat covers will need to be redone (cracked with age and use). We’re told that everything works (including factory A/C?) and the car performs smoothly. Though popular when new, these machines are seldom seen today as they were family transports that did their jobs well and were eventually sent to automotive graveyards. This one should draw some attention at Cars & Coffee not for being special but because it’s not a muscle car or a Japanese slingshot.

My family had a 72 Lesabre the exact same color but no vinyl top. It had the 455 and it was a great cruiser. Truly a galactic class battlestar. I abused many vehicles in Chicago parallel parking it. I have great memories of the majestic beast.

Unfortunately, trust me Russ, this car would be completely ignored at a Cars and Coffee, precisely because it isn’t a muscle car.

My very nice ’65 New Yorker gets loads of attention on the street, it’s pretty funny, but at a cruise-in or show? Nothing. It’s weird.

Mom traded in her rusting 1967 Wildcat (with the 430-4bbl) for the 1973 version of this car. Talk about detuned! While comfortable, it was ungodly slow, to the point of being dangerous, as it struggled to merge on the highway.

& this one’s been towed in the past from the rear end, with a bumper tow truck strap. It always left the bumpers CURVED UP in the middle🤪

It looks like they wanted a 69 Skylark look rear bumper .

No engine photos?? I’m sure it’s a 455 but it should be common knowledge to add photos of what under the hood looks like If you wanna sell an old family classic Buick like this one..I don’t get it…

Could be a decent car, but needs to be half the price.

My bad, most came with 350’s,but apparently not stated in ad, either way, it’s overpriced, I grew up in Chicago, there’s no shortage of beater’s there!

Could be a nice car but a bunch of ifs. To me this is what I want for transportation. Right now, I have a VW PSSAAT. The only thing I really like is it does get good highway mileage, but the Buick would be much more comfortable and haul more.
