31K Mile Survivor: 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

In 1982, the band, Survivor, released its hit “Eye of the Tiger” which was an instant hit. This is a survivor of another kind – a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with only 31,609 original miles. This car is listed for sale here on craigslist for an asking price of $24,500. The car is being sold by a dealer in Sherman, Texas. We appreciate Ikey Heyman for bringing this car to our attention.

The carpet shows a little fading and no tilt steering or power windows but otherwise looks to be in great shape. The Z28 was ordered with the standard interior with air conditioning that is said to blow cold. The car was bought in my hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana at Red River Chevrolet. I remember my Dad buying a 1975 baby blue Nova from that dealership when I wanted a Camaro!

The 1979 Z28 only produced 175 horsepower compared to the W72 Trans Am that produced 220 horsepower and the Corvette that produced 225 horsepower in 1979. If you want more power, the Chevy 350 cubic inch V8 engine is easy to modify. The radio is a modern Bluetooth dual post replacement so the dash is not cut. Otherwise, the car looks pretty original and unmolested. All gauges are said to be in working order.

The Z28 was the envy of most high school students in 1979. The car is equipped with the optional aluminum finned wheels. As a reference point, my brother just sold his black and gold 4 speed 1979 Z28 with 23k miles for $26,000 on consignment with a dealer. So who likes low mileage original Z28’s. This one will certainly take you back in time!

Had a good friend who bought one of these in black w/ gold striping, then about two years later, he replaced it with…you guessed it! Another one again in black and gold! Nice survivor, GLWTA! :-)

Very cool but I don’t think the red wheel paint is original. You could either get silver or gold. This would have originally had silver.

In 1979 I was in Thunder Bay Ontario and a dealer had one of these with a four speed. I believe, judging by the smell of the city, the pollution controls were less in Canada at the time and maybe the car had better HP. Not practical for me to buy due to being a family man, and getting a new car over the border would have been an EPA nightmare, but boy was it a nice car. Went to lunch and the waitress offered me vinegar for my fries! Weird country, but nice people, and super nice cars there.

Ordered one as soon as I got out of college. The white w/blue stripes, four speed, t-tops. Had it for seven years, sold it with 6,000 miles on it for $6,500. Years later the then owner tracked me down and I was able to re-unite it with it’s original window sticker.

Sounds like a pretty car, plus you got good money for it later.

I hear you Bill….I saw my first new car on the transport truck as it was being delivered to the dealership where I worked…79 fully loaded white with blue stripes Z-28. I bought it right away and I’m still enjoying it very much…

Had this year Z28 back in ’84. Yellow w/ black int. w/ Ttops, built 350 & 4sp. Had the yellow 5 spoke rally. Had black rear window louvers. Loved the car & only bought it as recalled how fun my 2nd car in HS was, that being a ’75 Formula, also yellow/black int. These body styles were AWESOME handlers with a set if GR60 radials on all 4 corners! In one of these, theres Nothing like getting off those army engineered highway exits that are circular! Better than my ’70 & ’78 Vettes were.
