327/4-Speed Project: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

When it was new, this 1969 Camaro would have been a very desirable car. Even today, in good condition it would still be desirable. Unfortunately, time hasn’t been kind to this car, but is it beyond help? You will find it listed for sale here on eBay. Located in Shawano, Wisconsin, it is offered with a clear title. Somebody must see potential in this car because after the bidding opened at $50, it has rocketed to $3,608 in under 12 hours.

There’s no way to sugar-coat this: This Camaro has some major rust issues. The front floors will require replacement, although we don’t get to see what state the rear floors or trunk floor are in. There is rust visible in the rockers, both rear quarter panels, the trunk lid and also the windshield frame and surrounding areas. There is some major metal-work required, but obviously, there are people who see some possibilities in this.

The interior is incomplete. The seats do come with the car, but we get no shots of them. The seller does state that they are in okay condition. There are some trim pieces that can be salvaged some that can be restored, but any form of vehicle restoration is going to also include a complete restoration of the interior.

Under the hood is the 327ci engine which is backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller says that the engine has not been run for several years, but that it does turn over. We get no information on the condition of any other components, but I can see that there is some work ahead here for the new owner.

This 1969 Camaro represents an enormous project for someone. This is one that I personally would find overwhelming, but there are people who see possibilities in this car, and this explains the strong bidding. The person who restores it will face some major work, but they will certainly have a sense of achievement when it is complete.

Anybody here know if the 327 was offered in a 69′ Camaro ?

Yes, it was the base V8 engine, a 210HP with 2 barrel carb.

The 327 was the ‘standard’ or base V8 in 1969 Camaros up until around January 1969, unless you’d spec’d an SS, or other engine upgrade package. It was replaced with the 307 which was a ‘low nickel’ block, famous for being ‘soft’ and pretty much low performance.

I would build a 307 before a 305 it would be less prone to detonation and spin up faster. I would use ho 305 heads however. Come to think of it lets just build the 327 or a 350.

The 327 was offered early in the production run. It wouldn’t have the oil filler on the intake nor a short water pump like the one installed in this car.

I wouldn’t assign much value to the engine or transmission, without knowing exactly what they came out of. It wouldn’t be difficult to find a throwaway Saginaw that came from a Vega and an unwanted 327 burried in the back of a shop, install them and pump up the price by $1,500-2,000.

MAJOR RUST ISSUES ? how much are you asking ? body shop labor on major rust issues is over twelve grand plus engine rebuild, have the trans checked out, for sure new clut and pres plate, have the diff checked as well. I wont pay no more than a thousand im just being realistic.

Probably lost it’s original engine long ago.
    Note the headers.
307 was the base V8 almost bought one.
You can see along time ago this car was loved. That time is long past and it is rough. Aluminum mags, had a rear spoiler.

I am so out of touch with old car prices at 58 years of age. If I spent $4,000 (where the car sits at now and will go higher) of my wife’s and my hard earned money and dragged this thing home, I better have a rain-proof insulated tarp for it because I would be sleeping in it.

Steve is correct, it’s likely not the original motor because of the oil fill tube on the intake, and the transmission may be a Saginaw. If it is a 1969 327/manual trans. the engine code will be “FJ.” That’s a 327/2Bbl./210 HP. If it’s a 307/200 HP. manual trans. the engine code will be “DA” if it’s a 3 speed or “DE” if it’s a 4 speed.

If it is a real numbers matching 327/4 speed car it’s probably not worth the money it’s at right now. Even if the numbers match, it’s worth what the unknown 327 and Muncie are worth, if it’s a Muncie. Otherwise it’s scrap. I hate to say that about any 69 Camaro, but that’s a fact.

12337 vin indecates factory 6 cylinder coupe . Looks to have had some heater core and box modification . I would suspect multiple engine swaps over the years .

In 1969 you could get anyone of about 8-9 different engines.
