32k Miles! 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Mailbu

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

1972 was the end of the line for the second generation Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu, with the Colonnade-style bodies taking their place for ’73, a popular style that lasted until the downsized fourth generation Malibu was introduced for the ’78 model.  If you’ve been in the market for an early-seventies Chevy this 1972 Chevelle Malibu has a history that can be traced all the way back to when the car was new, as it’s a one-owner vehicle that still seems to be in survivor status.  It’s located in Fairmont, West Virginia, and can be seen here on eBay, where bidding has reached $19,100 so far.  You’ll have to spend more than that to make it yours, as the reserve hasn’t been met, or you can buy it today for $26,000.

The seller calls his Chevelle 100% all original, a rather bold statement for a car that has now passed the 50-year mark, but he also claims to have one hundred percent documentation to back this up plus the original invoice, and with the stated mileage only at 32,605 this car may actually live up to those expectations.  This one’s got a 350 under the hood, with everything looking nice and orderly in the engine compartment, and to have been operating less than a thousand miles a year it probably hasn’t needed a whole lot of attention beyond just routine maintenance.  The seller says his Mailbu runs and drives great, and there’s also a 12-Bolt positraction rear-end.

It’s always a treat to see a Chevelle that hasn’t been tampered with on the outside, and the five-decade-old paint is still looking a lot better than most finishes with that much age on them.  There are a couple of door dings, and unfortunately, a cat peed on the hood and driver’s side fender affecting the paint in those areas.  The vinyl top appears to be well-preserved, with no visible splits or tears anywhere I could see, and although those are ’73 hubcaps I would have probably never noticed unless the owner had specifically pointed that out.

I usually pay close attention to the interior when a vehicle is said to have so few miles, and this one is seeming to live up to what a 32k-mile example should be looking like, at least from what I can tell.  The fact that the carpet wasn’t even vacuumed before the photo shoot is probably a good thing, making me feel that it’s being presented honestly, and the weatherstripping we can see seems to be in line condition-wise with what I would expect a car such as this to have.  Those cobwebs on the underside are also a good indicator that this Chevelle has seen limited use, plus it looks pretty solid down below too.  What are your thoughts on this one?

For that price, this car should be PERFECT,but it isn’t.
It appears to be a nice car,but I’d sure want to see it in
person before buying it.Also check around the rear window,
as the seals often failed in these.
These are really nice driving cars.I’ve driven a few of them.

Great find! I think why this is bringing more money than expected is that it is a factory L48 car; a 350 4bbl. That means a factory 12 bolt instead of a 10 bolt that is paired with the 307 and 350 2bbl cars.
That black interior is very nice, and features A/C, a stock radio, with rear speaker – and that speaker is set into a very nice package tray.
Seller could take out spare, jack and mat so we can see the floor, flaws and all. We all see the dent in the passenger front fender and wheel trim; how about a close up? And under the doors, while your at it….

IMO the black interior’s a bit of a letdown in not being matching green, but I can’t quibble with its’ condition. Definitely for the money a thorough PPI is called for, and the only thing I’d do to the exterior looks-wise is ditch the tires for some period-correct white stripes to complete the look.

It’s refreshing to see a preserved Malibu that is what it is-and not another SS clone/tribute. Cowl hoods and stripe kits are a dime a dozen.

This is the car that stopped any further interest in green cars.

It’s okay so long as you never succumb to the green eyed monster

Ahhh nice to see a plain Jane. That said..Make into a sleeper. If you like fast and loud like me. Nice 383/500hp tricked out turbo 350. Check and clean up the rear end. Then wash and detail the rest. Keep it plain!!This would make a sweet ride . 🇺🇸🐻🇺🇸

    I love it!

Nearby my house is a most amazing fab shop – the two guys there have been building custom cars for decades. They are also hard core stock car and road racers, and have been building race car parts for me for a long time. I’m there pretty much every week.

About 4 months ago I walk in, and see a car incredibly similar to this on the hoist. All original, low mileage, nice colour (a light gold), and I immediately start pouring over it. Its just a beautiful, original driver. Unfortunately, the owner of the car wants to use it to build a really big dollar custom machine, and before you know it there is a custom chassis under it, some monster motor ordered from a builder, the tunnel is cut out and a new one fabbed in to take the massive gearbox, huge disk brakes all around, etc. I admire their work (it is amazing), but it makes me sad to see another car like that transformed into….?

    cheers,

Meaning I should buy this one :)

(Sigh). There are 2 vintage street cars + 5 race cars (and 4 motorcycles) in the shop. No room at the inn I am afraid!

      cheers,
