360 Horsepower 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340

There were plenty of muscle car choices in the 1960s and 1970s. If you were a Mopar fan, you could stroll into a Dodge dealer and get a Charger or Coronet with a big-block V8 that left the factory at 400 horsepower or more. But if you wanted something a little more civilized, you could opt for a Dart Swinger with a smaller 340 engine and 275 hp, something easier on insurance premiums. This nice example comes with an interesting story, as it’s a near copy of a Swinger 340 the seller owned years ago. Located in Cambridge, Minnesota, this little powerhouse is available here on eBay, where the current bid is $19,100 with an unmet reserve.

Between 1968 and 1973, Chrysler installed nearly 217,000 340 cubic-inch small-blocks in various Dodge and Plymouth products. 13,785 of them found homes in 1970 Dodge Dart Swingers, the sporty 2-door hardtop the division had introduced the year before. These were hot properties back in the day, often going door-to-door with competitors such as the Chevy Nova SS 350. One of these Swinger 340s was purchased new by the seller, but he had to regrettably part with it later, thanks to a growing family.

As the story goes, the seller’s first Swinger 340 was painted Sassy Green like this one, which originally wore Dark Green Poly. Both had 4-speeds and 3.91 gears along with a black bench seat interior. About 10 years ago, the seller found out this vehicle was for sale, and his love for the first one took over, and he bought it. The factory 340 had been replaced by a 360, but the old motor was still around, so the seller had it rebuilt and reinstalled. it now puts out 360 horsepower!

The body and paint are tidy, though the seller provides a photo showing some bubbles brewing. The interior seems equally stout. We can’t help but wonder why the owner would let his second love get away (perhaps he’ll buy it back from you a few years from now!). We’re told, “This is a fantastic car and you will not be disappointed.” We’re also inclined to agree.

This one has the recipe for a quick trip down the 1/4 mile. 🏁 personally always preferred the style of the barracuda over the dart. But when you’re behind the wheel you don’t notice looks. 👍
    Thanks Dixon.

Favorite Mopar Hi Impact color. Mildly envious of the buyer.

Russ, it’s Sassy Grass green. Great write-up other than that mild faux pas.
