Okay, Howard, Rube, and others — the perpetual complaint about the Triumphs we feature is that they don’t have overdrive. Well, this 1972 TR6 does! It also has a fairly rare metal factory hardtop. It’s very reasonably priced at $3,750 and is listed for sale here on craigslist in Norfolk, Virginia.
We don’t know much about the car from the text or the pictures in the ad, but if you are interested at all in one of the “last of the hairy-chested British sports cars,” this would be one worth checking out. There’s one catch; that dreaded phrase “missing title.” Any readers have experience with that process in Virginia?
Here are the two transmissions that come with the car, with the overdrive one being next to the brick wall. Unlike a Spitfire, the TR overdrive transmissions are the same length and bolt up the same way as the standard transmissions, so swapping one out doesn’t require any driveshaft changes. I wish I had more to tell you about this particular car, but that’s all we know. The first thing I’d want to know is what the commission (serial) number is of the car in order to date it a little better. I think they may be right that it is a 1972, however. Having owned three 1972 TR6s, they can be a little quirky. For example, I’ve been told there was a strike going on at Lucas while the model year was in production. The end result was that about three months worth of production of TR6s were fitted with Delco-Remy alternators and have modified wiring harnesses as a result. You need to know that because no one sells those alternators and the Lucas ones don’t hook up the same way! Been there, done that. Anyway, if you need a Delco-Remy, let me know; I think I have three on the shelf now! Let us know if you are interested in this Triumphant find!
Ha, ha, good one on the overdrive. (I think sharp readers already figured out Rube is Howard) Actually, THE lowest price of ANY 6 I’ve seen for a while. The lost title could be an issue, and don’t say it’s easy, I just got done dealing with CDOT on registering issues, it’s no fun, I’d imagine a lost out of state title would pad even more pockets. Hardtop, a huge plus, and I bet, title issues resolved, you could have a decent 6 for around $5g’s. Can’t find them for that, you just can’t, and before buying the GMC, I looked.
I’ve been working on one for a few years. It will take far more than another $1,250 to have a decent TR6. Maybe $12,500 depending on how much work you do yourself and your definition of “decent”.
I’m not saying this legally but if anyone needs a TR6 title I have a few in my safe from Cars I scrapped out years ago and some of them may have the commission tags with them as well. Again this is from a collectability standpoint only, wink wink.
