One of the more challenging moments in the life of a gearhead is deciding whether to buy a timewarp car in a base- or mid-level trim, or to buy a driver that sports the top-shelf engine along with other premium features. Buying a base model when a “hot” or upscale model is available can prove to be risky business if you shell out real money for the nicest one you can find, and therein lies the challenge with this Dodge Stealth R/T. It’s in phenomenal condition but it’s not the desirable turbocharged model that most of us want. Find this time warp Stealth here on craigslist for $10,500.
The Dodge Stealth is one of those 90s cars that certainly has all the credentials for becoming a collector’s item but is not regularly seen as model worth squirreling away. The Stealth and its corporate twin the Mitsubishi 3000GT suffer similar fates, and while enthusiasts will drool over the still-striking looks and lusty performance of the turbocharged AWD models, it has yet to break free as a car that will someday command big bucks. My feeling is it never got the respect it wanted when new as the automotive press always seemed to hold it at arm’s length, citing a driving experience that didn’t live up to the hype.
Like the Ford Mustang, everyone wants the GT model but most folks ended up with the six-cylinder LX. The Stealth was a fairly ordinary car in the lower trim tiers, with grey mouse-fuzz upholstery, standard power features, and bucket seats with a range of adjustments. Everything you needed and nothing you didn’t (well, unless you wanted a turbocharged powerplant, in which case you needed to step up a bit price-wise.) That’s not to say you didn’t get a lot for your money, as it came with four-wheel disc brakes, climate control A/C, electronically adjustable suspension, a CD player, and more,
Despite all of that, I can’t help but wonder if this seller is going to have to accept a lower price to move this Stealth along. Yes, it looks quite nice inside and out, with a stock engine bay affirming that this Stealth remains unmodified. The seller confirms it is unmodified and has been adult-owned, so if you wanted an interesting daily and didn’t need a ton of space, this naturally-aspirated Stealth could be worthy of a closer look – but I’d need to be into it for safely under $10,000 to attempt to forget that the turbocharged variant still exists. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Mike Haisler for the find.
This is a good looking Stealth, and perfect color for some stealth driving. The only problem is the missing third pedal. Sports cars need a third pedal!
The manual trans on these was troublesome.
Lavery… those LX foxbodys were almost all 2.3 four pots.
