390 Equipped: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach I

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Over the past couple of decades, I’ve only bought either black or white cars for my daily commutes, as has been the case with my last four.  Some of that mindset is probably a habit pattern, but another possible reason is that more recent autos don’t seem to offer nearly the variety of great color choices that many vintage offerings do.  One of my favorite Ford shades from the late sixties is Silver Jade, and although it’s likely been decades since this 1969 Mustang Mach I here on eBay was wearing much outside, the Marti report confirms it was the factory hue.  This one’s in Wilton, California, and while it needs a total restoration, the seller says that some of the bones will still be good to work with.  An asking price of $17,000 has been set here, but there’s also a make offer option, should that cost sound a bit steep.

I’m not necessarily a fan of sellers using humor in large doses when describing their project, but I did laugh out loud when he called the previous caretaker a bonehead for leaving this Mustang outside with the windows down and the trunk open.  That’ll wreak havoc on even a California car, which this one’s claimed to be, but the rust-free status has switched to at least the floors and trunk pan needing attention in this department.  The quarters are stated as great, so hopefully, they’ll smooth out nicely.  However, the front grille and bumper are missing, so these items will need to be sourced and installed.

There’s both good news and bad coming from the engine compartment.  The standard engine in the ’69 Mach I was a 351 cubic-inch V8, but this came from the factory equipped with a 390, and the owner confirms that it’s still numbers-matching.  Not as favorable is that it’s reported to be stuck, with a few of the exterior components also removed, and I’m going to guess it’s been quite some time since this one ran for the final time.  Not a word is spoken about the transmission, other than it’s an automatic, and of the C6 variety if original.

There isn’t a good view provided from the dashboard area, with this photo being as close as we get.  However, numerous floor shots are included, and while the metal here certainly needs replacing, some of that Silver Jade finish is still visible.  I hope whoever brings this one back to life sticks with that color, as I think it works great on this body style, but that decision will be entirely up to the buyer.  Is this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach I at a reasonably good starting point to consider taking on as a project?

Lotsa money for a shell, anchored down by a block of iron.

But hey at least someone painted it in an appropriate shade for a parts car.

Dude, let’s take your dads Mustang for a ride. I don’t know, he’ll be gone for a while,,okay. Jr. and friend found out they go a lot better than they stop. These had disc front brakes, but radials were a few years away, and bias ply were downright dangerous, as evidenced here. Oh, they tried frantically to repair the damage, but alas, was too much and by then the old man had the new T-Bird ordered anyway, and this sat. Through the years, several tried to cobble it back, in vain, after all, it IS a ’69 Mach 1.
Ah, but all wasn’t lost, Jr.,,now an old man himself, held onto it all these years, and now he figures is his chance at redemption, or so he thought. How can anyone have any conscience at all asking these kinds of prices. The digital age, that’s how.

Gobs of work here, but if any model could justify it, the 1969 Mach 1 would qualify. I agree, there were several very attractive colors in the late 60’s, Silver Jade being an example. This car was well-equipped and would have been striking with the white interior. Kudos for the Marti Report.

    Good job Mike.

It’s a mess, but there are places such as the top of the inner fender fore and aft of the shock towers that typically rust and a hard to get at, which don’t look bad. It probably is a California car, which suggests the extent of the rust could be limited. The car is located within a 2 hour drive of over 6 million people, if someone is looking for a 69 Mach 1 project it’s worth a drive. If you don’t show up you can’t really determine its actual condition and sellers are much more likely to negotiate with someone face to face.

The floors could easily be cleaned up and if a patch is required it would be better, keep the originality. Not a bad project.

There’s not a lot to work with with this Mach I. The exterior appears to be good from the cowl back but that’s its only selling point. This car’s needs can best be described as everything.

Roadkill’s ‘disgustang’ was pulled from a junkyard in better shape and for far less than $17K.
