4-Speed Pickup Project: 1976 Jeep J-10 4×4

If a person wants to stand out from the crowd, or at least the crowd of folks who drive pickup trucks, they’ll drive an old pickup. If they want to stand out from the old pickup crowd you drive a truck like this 1976 Jeep J10. The seller has this one listed here on eBay in Terre Haute, Indiana and the current bid price is $2,225.

You already know which truck is on my wish list. I like my vehicles on the different side, in general, so having an orange Bicentennial year Jeep 4×4 pickup with a 4-speed is the one I want. Unfortunately, this one isn’t running and it may be more of a project than I want to take on right now but for one of you, this could be a great project.

The J10 was Jeep’s name for what was the Gladiator after they started naming them with J-Series nomenclature followed by a number noting the payload, such as J2000. After 1974, they were known as J10, or J-10, J-20, etc., until the end of the run in 1988. The full-sized Jeep pickup didn’t fit into Chrysler’s plan, fearing they may take sales away from Dodge when they took over American Motors/Jeep in 1987. The smaller Comanche pickup was kept on board until 1992.

The seller has had this Jeep J-10 for a year thinking that they would restore it but as is often the case, and most of us have been there, life got in the way. It looks solid other than the right rear side of the box (or, bed) which needs welding help but otherwise, it looks straight and mostly rust-free. This one has a 4-speed manual transmission.

The engine should be AMC’s 258 cubic-inch inline-six with around 112 horsepower. The seller says that it has a few new parts under the hood and it turns over but isn’t firing as it should. I’d get it running, fix the seat, clean it up as much as possible and drive it. Are there any other Jeep pickup fans out there?

This one really has my interest – too bad I bought
    a ’95 Dakota 4WD a few months back.
The downside is that bid is a “Reserve not met” one,
so might not be a good deal.

Very basic six banger Scotty. I’m sure that you and Howard could have it up and running in no time.

I owned a 79 j10. What a stump puller 3 low gears and one high gear. 258 4 speed with Dana 44 axles. Good truck!

I was somewhat excited to see this, but quickly remembered that I already have a more desirable ’68 Gladiator with the Thriftside bed, V8, and stick sitting in my driveway!mark mitchell

Back in the day I started out with a 1976, red white, and blue beautiful truck (V8). When I began to race offroad I decided to go with a shortbed with a 401 for the engine. Great truck! Won a lot of trophies with this truck against Chevy and Ford…lol.

Amazing to see so little rust. Should make it to a new home. I’d clean it up and try to get it running…

Nice looking–without seeing underneith of it. The frames aren,t too thick. I,d have to look it over good first. Before I,d sink $2,000 in this one. I,ll drop it in the 72 out back. The bad side on these trucks is they rusted out quick. If its in good shape. Clean underneith really good.Let it dry and put the grease to everything you can reach underneith..Good luck to who ever buys it.They are easy to work on and you can still get parts for them.
