The 442 or 4-4-2 was Oldsmobile’s mid-size performance car in the 1960s and 1970s. It would be popular enough to warrant becoming a series of its own from 1968 to 1971, but it would be an option on the Cutlass after that (as demand declined). This 1971 edition is a project car that has damaged sheet metal and an incomplete engine, yet the seller says he/she has “parts bought new for it”. Muscle car demand peaked for most auto manufacturers in 1970, and Oldsmobile was no exception. In 1971, they produced just 6,285 of the 442 coupes with 810 having the potent W-30 455 cubic inch V8. Unfortunately, the seller doesn’t tell us if the latter applies to this car, so perhaps it only had the “base” 455 which had an output of 340 hp as the detuning process of cars for lower emissions had begun. But is the engine there original to the car?

This auto comes with few details but the photos do help a bit. The Olds appears to have (or had) a 4-speed manual transmission. It’s been in a collision as the driver’s side rear quarter panel is crinkled in front of the wheel well. And it once had a vinyl top as there is rust where the chrome trim was removed from the C-pillars. There are a few parts in the trunk that look like taillight assemblies, but there’s no visible sign of the new parts that were purchased for the project.

For someone interested in acquiring a 1970s 442 project, more photos and details should be needed before deciding to pull the trigger. Craiglist allows up to 24 photos and more content that would go a long way to helping this Oldsmobile find a new home.
