A 401 V8 in a full-size Jeep is a pretty good way to get an enthusiast’s attention. AMC’s big 6.6-liter engine was the top dog in the Cherokee lineup, and 1978 was its final year in civilian Jeeps. This yellow four-door has that V8 under the hood, along with an automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. The seller is asking $12,000 for this Jeep, listed on craigslist in Port Huron, Michigan.

The Cherokee shared much of its basic body design with the Wagoneer, but it had a more rugged image. Four doors make this one practical, while the big V8 gives it plenty of old-school appeal. The seller describes it as a numbers-matching Z-code Jeep, although that claim would need to be verified.

Power goes through a three-speed TH400 automatic, with full-time four-wheel drive sending it to the ground. The Quadra-Trac system was a notable feature of these Jeeps, and its emergency-lock control was tucked inside the glovebox. It’s an unusual place for a control like that, but it’s one of those details that makes older four-wheel-drive systems interesting.

According to the seller, the engine has about 9,000 miles since being rebuilt by RPM Machine in Sturgis, South Dakota. The seller also lists extensive mechanical work, including a rebuilt four-barrel carburetor, timing chain and cover, head gasket, wiring harness, fuel pump, water pump, brake and steering components, and exhaust parts. That’s a substantial amount of work, though buyers will want to review the details and any available receipts.

The interior has had some attention, too. The seats have been reupholstered, and there’s a new dash cover and steering wheel, along with replacement door and window handles and instrumentation components. The seller says the dashboard has no cracks. The yellow paint still gives the Jeep plenty of presence, but hail damage is noted, so this isn’t a pristine showpiece. The listing also reports five tires with about 9,000 miles on them and a clean title.

Would you keep this 401-powered Cherokee as a comfortable old-school driver, or take advantage of that V8 and four-wheel-drive system and build a trail rig? Thanks to Rocco B. for putting this big V8 Jeep on our radar!
