41K-Mile Shorty: 1987 Chevrolet G10 Van

What I wouldn’t have done to own this 1987 Chevrolet G10 van back in the band days. Although, that would have been tough to do since my band era was several years prior to 1987. This beautiful shorty van is posted here on craigslist in Bakersfield, California and the seller is asking $17,500. Here is the original listing and thanks to Rocco B. for sending in this tip!

The Chevrolet Van was made for over three decades, from 1964 to 1996 and they were the predecessor to the Chevrolet Express vans which are still being made today. This era of Chevy Van came in 1-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1/2-ton models – the G30, G20, and G10 as seen here. They also came in a 110-inch wheelbase, commonly known as a shorty van such as this one, or a longer 125-inch wheelbase model. The “band van” in question was a well-used 1974 Dodge with a 225 slant-six and three-on-the-tree, a former Sears delivery van as seen here.

The third-generation Chevrolet Van was made from the spring of 1970 for the 1971 model year up until the end of the 1996 model year. Several different door and window configurations were available depending on the type of van that a customer wanted or needed. This example is equipped with a sliding passenger-side cargo door and “swing out” doors were also available. I’ve never owned a full-sized van with a sliding side door but I did have a 1987 Dodge Mini Ram cargo van with a sliding side door and that was great.

You can see that this Chevy van appears to be in absolutely outstanding condition, almost looking like it’s been restored. The seller says that the white portions on the top and bottom have been added and there are a few normal wear marks and scratches on the blue portion, but it really looks like a gem. This is a cargo van with no rear seating at all, a van made for hauling. Perfect for band equipment, although some shag carpeting would be nicer than a rubber mat. The cab seating portion looks great to me for a 35-year-old van, although the seller says that the seats have been reupholstered.

This van is equipped with a Chevrolet 4.3L fuel-injected V6 and the seller says that it runs and drives fine but has been sitting for a year so they recommend a tune-up. Also, the radio and air-conditioning need help. The seller has included a lot of great photos, well done! NADA appears to be way off on their valuation as they list a value of $4,075, but I’m not sure about the seller’s $17,500 asking price either. How much would you pay for this fantastic-looking Chevy van?

17500 for this, it’s not a v8 needs tune up, A/C repair and radio. Forget it!

$5500 to 6000. There’s a lot more out there at lower prices than this.

The author has obviously never been on tour lol. You want the biggest van you can get when you’re jammed in it with your band mates for hours on end, living on gas station food and cheap beer. Sometimes I miss those early days…

Ha, you speak the truth, RKS – just played locally and within 2-3 hours.

Hopefully you got a low key local sqeezer and got out of there. Make some memories you should forget.
