427/4-Speed: 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

If you’re an enthusiast more focused on outright performance than total originality, you may find this 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS irresistible. Its presentation is superb, but the star of the show is the updated V8 under the hood, delivering an incredible 450hp. That makes this a genuinely fast classic, but the seller hasn’t neglected other areas of the drivetrain. They have transformed this Chevelle into a total package, thanks to some carefully considered brake and suspension upgrades. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Mitchell G. for spotting the Chevelle listed here on eBay in Lubbock, Texas. It could be yours for $57,777, though you can make an offer.

The seller describes this Second Generation Chevelle as comprehensively restored, but changes below the surface lead me to consider it meticulously refurbished. The exterior wears the correct Seafrost Green Metallic paint that appears flawless. It is beautifully consistent across all surfaces, with no visible chips, marks, or deterioration. The panels are as straight as an arrow, and this beast appears to be rust-free. The stripes are crisp, the chrome and glass are excellent, and although the 15″ American Racing Torq Thrust wheels aren’t original, they are period-correct and provide the first indication that there might be more to this SS than meets the eye.

The refurbishment of this Chevelle included a wide range of mechanical upgrades. The engine bay houses a 427ci V8, with the seller quoting a power output of 450hp. Those ponies feed to a 12-bolt rear end via a Muncie four-speed manual transmission. However, that isn’t the end of the upgrades, because the builder installed a Stage 3 Pro-Touring adjustable suspension kit from Classic Performance Products. With the braking system now sporting four-wheel drilled and slotted discs, this Chevelle should handle and stop far better than it would have when it left the factory. The seller states that this Chevelle’s appearance doesn’t flatter to deceive. The car drives as impressively as it looks. Therefore, flying in and driving home is a realistic option for the new owner.

The Chevelle’s interior didn’t escape the builder’s attention, receiving a retrim in Black vinyl. It features a bench seat and the rather cool factory roller tachometer. The builder upgraded the factory air conditioning with Vintage Air components, while adding a retro-style stereo and a tilt wheel to improve interior comfort. Faulting the inside of this SS is seemingly impossible. The lack of wear and other visible defects suggests that this Chevelle has been treated respectfully and has seen limited use since the refurbishment ended.

This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is a stunning car that is guaranteed to turn heads. It will command respect the moment the hood is lifted, courtesy of the fire-breathing V8 that delivers more power than most enthusiasts could ever need. Of course, that is relative, because I have never heard anyone wishing that their classic had less power. Placing a value on any modified vehicle is challenging because cars of that type are typically worth what someone is willing to pay. Do you feel that the seller’s BIN is realistic, or do you believe that compromise may be required for this Chevelle to find a new home?

Stunning Chevrolet Clarkey, big motor and 4sp.. seems well bought at the price unless I’m missing something. Steve R. has his thumb on the pulse regarding value.

Very tastefully done and seems to be modded thoughtfully. The price looks to be a winning hand and well worth raking in the pot for.
    Another excellent pick!

If it’s nice as the pictures suggest it was well thought out and executed. It has a vintage feel, but the wheels and engine components are contemporary parts, not vintage. Whoever built it spent their money wisely, the chose parts that didn’t ballon the budget and look to have spent time detailing it rather than money on too many shiny parts. Compare this to the other 1968 SS featured yesterday, that has potential, but will cost much more than this cars selling price when finished. The two will appeal to different segments of the market, but difference in dollars shouldn’t be ignored.

Form follows function. Firm believer in that. And see alot of fun producing function here! Power, handling, looks, manual, all lead to a good time.
All for the price of a depreciating f150.

The turn-off for me is the angle of the rear mount radio antenna. Originals had it straight-up and in 1969, was $9.50. Or mount it on the right front fender.
To me, it spoils the rest of the car about as much as those spring loaded ones do. Ok, ok, I’m nit picking.

      You’re not picky.
      IT IS DORKY!
Distracting from an otherwise elegant build!

Good golly! This is beautiful, and checks all the boxes for me. I like the vent windows of the 68 and the tail/brake lights which wrapped around the fender extension. It’s probably a good thing for me it isn’t closer to me. At the asking price, I don’t think this will be for sale for very long. GLWTS

    Let’s see:
A mod-top Barracuda or this beauty for the same ask!? Silly question, at least, to me…

I had a 1968, same color. However, mine was with the original 396/325 and a 3 speed transmission. Loved that car, but sold it just before going overseas. What a dumb mistake that was.
